Tikanga Maori (Revised Edition)
Tikanga Maori (Revised Edition): Living By Maori Values | Hirini Moko Mead
2 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
Tikanga Maori is the authoritative and accessible introduction to understanding the correct Maori ways of doing things as they were done in the past, as they are done in the present - and as they may yet be.In this revised edition, Hirini Mead has added an extensive new chapter on mana whenua, mana moana, Maori authority over land and ocean, and the different interpretations and applications of mana whenua and mana moana historically and today.Hirini Mead has also updated the section on tangihanga to include contemporary issues about cremation choices and what happens to the deceased in Maori/non-Maori partnerships where there are disputes about following tangi tikanga or Pakeha traditions. The remainder of the book explores how tikanga Maori may influence contemporary life and society, and Hirini Mead proposes guidelines to help us test appropriate responses to challenges that may yet be laid down.

Pickpick

Tikanga Maori is the concept of the rules that regulate and guide the lives of Maori people, and is used in every aspect of the life from the simple tasks, to the art, science, behaviour, ethics, spiritual guidance... All that was very new to me, and I think that this book is not meant for people like me - without any previous knowledge. Very academic, but still, the topic is interesting.

Simona @Riveted_Reader_Melissa #Nonfiction2021 - something by a native author 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa That sounds very interesting though. 3y

Simona @Riveted_Reader_Melissa It is, but that book really demands some knowledge about the topic ... I was googling at least three times per page to collect, to me, missing information. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Simona gotcha, so maybe read something more introductory first. 3y
Reggie Have you read this, Paula? This sounds like a you book. @Centique 3y
Centique @Reggie I haven‘t read this one! Well done you @simona for getting through it. You are a star! If anyone else wants a less academic look at maori philosophy there is this brand new book I‘m on hold for at the moment @Riveted_Reader_Melissa (edited) 3y
Simona @Centique Reading that book it was hard work, but I also think that this way of understanding things and world is fascinating. Thank you for your recommendation, it definitely sounds more approachable than my pick 🤗 3y

I finished all the books from previously #weeklyforecast except the tagged book ... it is interesting (about Maori-an culture, law, tradition...), but I have to googling at almost every page! The Banquet of Donny & Ari is for #Booked and Sing, Unburied, Sing is for #AuthorAMonth challenge. Breasts and Eggs pick my interest, when I saw it on few lists as a strong contender for #InternationalBookerPrize2021

Cinfhen I read and enjoyed 2 of your books / the JW and 3y
Cinfhen I think you‘ll like both ❤️ 3y
Liz_M 😍 Sing Unburied Sing 3y
