Sister of Mine
Sister of Mine: A Novel | Laurie Petrou
10 posts | 8 read | 5 to read
For fans of Sarah Pinborough and Liane Moriarty comes a taut domestic suspense about the lies we tell to hold our lives together. Sisters, like secrets, are best kept close. Penny and Hattie, orphaned sisters in a small town, are best friends, bound together to the point of knots. But Penny, at the mercy of her brutal husband, is desperate for a fresh start. Willing to do anything for her older sister, Hattie agrees to help. A match is struck and a fire burns Pennys marriage to the ground. With her husband gone, Penny is free, and the sisters, it seems, get away with murder. But freedom comes at a cost. More than a year after the fire, a charming young man comes to town. Hattie and Penny quickly bring him into the fold and into their hearts but their love for him threatens the delicate balance. Soon long-held resentments, sibling rivalry, and debts unpaid boil over, and the bonds of sisterhood begin to snap. As one little lie grows into the next, the sisters secrets will unravel, eroding their lives until only a single, horrible truth remains: You owe me. A compelling novel of suspense from a talented new voice, Sister of Mine asks us to consider the bonds of family, what it takes to commit the unthinkable, and how far youll go to protect the ones you love.

An atmospheric read/listen that leaves a taste of melancholy in the air...and, left me feeling sort of depressed. A dispiritedness that even Andi Arndt's usually pleasing narration couldn't chase away.

A pick but only just. The dynamic between the sisters is fascinating and quite twisted. The plot itself was good but I had figured out the truth of the fire. The story is told by Penny and at times i liked her but much of the time i found her and Hattie not likeable enough to be really invested in their story. The ending however did fit the story well. #WinterGames #TBR #TeamElectricSex @Clwojick @StayCurious @LibrarianRyan

I‘m only 20 pages in, and have lost count of how many I‘ve come across so far. This is apparently one of my literary pet peeves. Maybe I‘m just old fashioned. Does this technique bother you?

GingerAntics In dialogue I don‘t mind, because people don‘t talk in perfect English with perfect grammar. I actually don‘t like when characters are made to do so. Outside of that, no. Just no. 5y
Texreader Ditto what @GingerAntics said. Same. 5y
SleepyDragon Lol. It's something I not only don't mind, but a literary device I am fond of using myself. Sparingly, for impact. 😁 5y
keys_on_fire @GingerAntics I agree with what you said. And @NeesyBeth yes, sparingly for impact would be so much better. Kind of how I feel about swearing too lol 5y
GingerAntics @keys_on_fire I had a writing teacher who said that in fiction, one swear word has the impact of three in real life, so use them if it‘s right for your character in that situation but it‘s so easy to over use them. I definitely agree with that assessment. 5y

Wonder if fictional characters love the classics way more than real life people.

WhiskeyMistress It‘s like there‘s a rule, all fictional women must like the Brontes. And poetry by Emily Dickinson 😂 6y

These two sisters are more #foes than friends at times in this small town story. Secrets spin out of control in this quick read. It‘s a straightforward story but my Sweet Valley-loving soul wishes these sisters were twins instead because this is exactly that sort of drama!! #CoolBooks #avocadotoast

Mcoun Your avocado toast looks delicious! 6y
TorieStorieS @mcoun Thanks! My husband outdid himself on this!! 6y

TorieStorieS Thanks, @Linsy - weekend avocado toast has become a new tradition in our house! And it‘s quite tasty!! 😋 6y

I really enjoyed this book! I don't have any sisters, but this tale of two sisters resonated with me. The secrets in life always float to the surface, no matter how hard we try to sink them. As the saying goes, the truth shall set you free! I definitely recommend this book!
