The Life and Rhymes of Benjamin Zephaniah
The Life and Rhymes of Benjamin Zephaniah: The Autobiography | Benjamin Zephaniah
6 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
*BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week* Benjamin Zephaniah, who has travelled the world for his art and his humanitarianism, now tells the one story that encompasses it all: the story of his life. In the early 1980s when punks and Rastas were on the streets protesting about unemployment, homelessness and the National Front, Benjamins poetry could be heard at demonstrations, outside police stations and on the dance floor. His mission was to take poetry everywhere, and to popularise it by reaching people who didnt read books. His poetry was political, musical, radical and relevant. By the early 1990s, Benjamin had performed on every continent in the world (a feat which he achieved in only one year) and he hasnt stopped performing and touring since. Nelson Mandela, after hearing Benjamins tribute to him while he was in prison, requested an introduction to the poet that grew into a lifelong relationship, inspiring Benjamins work with children in South Africa. Benjamin would also go on to be the first artist to record with The Wailers after the death of Bob Marley in a musical tribute to Nelson Mandela. The Life and Rhymes of Benjamin Zephaniah is a truly extraordinary life story which celebrates the power of poetry and the importance of pushing boundaries with the arts.

A perfectly narrated biography by the author detailing his early years of crime in Birmingham to his activism, politics and poetry. That last line really got me 😭
An incredible life. 5⭐️

Bookwomble 😊 Love this, though I'd've liked to have seen some Brigantes in the initial mix, as they were the Celtic tribe living in Lancashire, and much of the North before the Romans 😁 6y

TheAnitaAlvarez Very intrigued by the “hot Chileans” part. We are considered the most boring country in Latin America 😂 6y
TrishB @TheAnitaAlvarez I wasn‘t aware of that 😁 I thought maybe it was a play on words hot chillis? 6y

Mehso-so

Benjamin Zephaniah's faith in poetry does my heart good! He's an interesting man and has led an eventful life but he doesn't come across to his best advantage here: it's all a bit "then I did this, then I did that, then I spoke to so-and-so" and there were times I wished he'd go into things more deeply, too. He's a performance poet: that's where his words sing out with the full force of the man so do yourself a favour and check him out on YouTube.

I went to see Benjamin Zephaniah last night at the Liverpool Philharmonic. He chatted about his book and performed some of his poetry (and when I say “performed”, I mean he really PERFORMED!!). He‘s a dub poet - and if you‘ve never heard him, get on to YouTube and listen to him (Rong Radio is very good!). I‘d better read this now - my friend who went with me is waiting to borrow it!!

Clare_Riley Actually, I‘ll link it: https://youtu.be/a3HjMcY50Kc 6y
