Last night our incredible Baudelaire passed away. I am grateful my partner and I were both with him at the end, sitting together on our living room floor. He was a warm, sweet reading companion and I will miss him so much.

Two months ago, our white cat Georgella died, so this picture is extra poignant for me right now.

Well, I‘m finally ready to read Virginia‘s last diary. I know I‘m going to get emotional about the tragic ending. Being a psychologist, I keep wishing that someone could have helped her with her depression although she chose not to get the help that was available to her even back then. She was such a tremendously gifted woman who never recognized her value, which we profit from now.

Spotify let me know about a livestream event from the English Chamber Orchestra. I went to their website and saw it was Facade, which meant nothing to me, but as I read more it started to seem familiar. Then I remembered I had read aloud a portion of Woolf‘s diary to my partner about it! She said of Sitwell (whose “delightfully quirky” poetry—as the ECO describes—accompanied William Walton‘s music): “She has one tune only on her merry go round.”

Never mind; to be dashed is always the most bracing treatment for me. A cold douche should be taken (and generally is) before beginning a book.

This has been a “special” read for me. I absolutely savored becoming intimate with Virginia Woolf and the opportunity to gain entry into her emotional life. She became more and more open about her sadness and insecurities as the years progressed which makes me almost have to begin reading the next diary. However, it was a long and difficult read for me; not exactly sure why. I definitely am captivated and awestruck by her. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

SamAnne Loved her diary. Love everything Woolf!! 4y
DrSabrinaMoldenReads I am going to have to start on her next one now. @SamAnne 4y

No joke. This took my breath away when I read it...

Blaire I reread a room of ones own this year and it still felt so relevant. Was underlining and wanting to write down so many quotes. 4y

I find it interesting that I had to grow into Virginia‘s mindset, just Ike in her books, in order to understand her better. She has her own way with language... 🤷🏽‍♀️

I'm about 80 pages into the first volume of Woolf's diaries. She discusses the weather, household affairs, writing projects, social engagements, etc. And occasionally she drops a witty, astute observation that makes me laugh. Like this little line. 🙂

ManyWordsLater Love it. I think saying someone is nice is one of the meanest things you can say. Bounded. Still. Boring. 5y
merelybookish @ManyWordsLater Yes, nice can be code for dull. 😬 5y
readinginthedark @ManyWordsLater Tone of voice is definitely important when interpreting the word "nice." ? 5y
readinginthedark I love Woolf but have never read any of her diaries or letters. I should! 5y
Michael_Gee I loved this line too! 4y
DrSabrinaMoldenReads Her diaries get better and better 4y
DrSabrinaMoldenReads She has this obsession about water and eventually drowns herself as you may know. @Libby1 4y

Herbrand Edward Dundonald Brassey Sackville was someone‘s actual name. How would you even begin to pick a nickname? Herbie? Eddie is too easy. Dun-D? Or just Brassey? Am I missing one? (And to top it off he was the 9th Earl De La Warr!) 🧐

Sleepy stack of Woolfs. It‘s been a hard few days, and I need the comfort of books in bed with my pets and my guy. And a drink. Or two.

Inundated by animals! Evening is coming and all these cat snores are making me drowsy. Been reading Woolf‘s diary a lot recently. We have so much going on and it‘s a great way to step out of the fast moving current of daily life (and into hers!)

As a new resident, I've been having #funfunfun getting to know Denver by exploring its bookstores.Yesterday, I went to the south Broadway antique district where some used bookshops are located. Pretty excited about finding Volume 3 of Woolf's diaries.
