Let Your Mind Run: A Memoir of Thinking My Way to Victory | Deena Kastor, Michelle Hamilton
11 posts | 12 read | 1 reading | 4 to read
Deena Kastor was a star youth runner with tremendous promise, yet her career almost ended after college, when her competitive methodrun as hard as possible, for fear of losingfostered a frustration and negativity and brought her to the brink of burnout. On the verge of quitting, she took a chance and moved to the high altitudes of Alamosa, Colorado, where legendary coach Joe Vigil had started the first professional distance-running team. There she encountered the idea that would transform her running career: the notion that changing her thinkingshaping her mind to be more encouraging, kind, and resilientcould make her faster than shed ever imagined possible. Building a mind so strong would take years of effort and discipline, but it would propel Kastor to the pinnacle of runningto American records in every distance from the 5K to the marathonand to the accomplishment of earning Americas first Olympic medal in the marathon in twenty years. Let Your Mind Run is a fascinating intimate look inside the mind of an elite athlete, a remarkable story of achievement, and an insightful primer on how the small steps of cultivating positivity can give anyone a competitive edge.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 I got this book from a bookstore running group that sadly had to end in early 2020 due to covid. I finally read it! I enjoyed her story and her intentional gratitude, which is something I want to apply to everything, not just running. I was struck by her statements about the difference between being fit and being healthy. I recommend this for anyone who runs, even casually, or anyone who wants inspiration to practice more gratitude.

Deena shows us not only her experiences with running, but experiences that every runner has at one point encountered. Her writing gave me both inspirational and something to think about during longer runs

Great tips for the mental side of running! Deena is a great story teller-you feel like you are running right beside her as she describes her races.

Inspiration to run harder? Inspiration to get out in the heat and humidity? Hopefully.

I really enjoyed this memoir. From a child to a young adult to adult, her experiences with running with mindfulness in tow. Currently getting into both running and mindfulness so I was fairly interested! And it was told well so definitely grateful for that. I was thoroughly entranced every step of the way. I would love to read a part 2 of her tackling the masters -
