This Dark Road to Mercy
This Dark Road to Mercy: A Novel | Wiley Cash
Hailed as "mesmerizing" (New York Times Book Review) and "as if Cormac McCarthy decided to rewrite Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird" (Richmond Times-Dispatch), A Land More Kind Than Home made Wiley Cash an instant literary sensation. His resonant new novel, This Dark Road to Mercy, is a tale of love and atonement, blood and vengeance, a story that involves two young sisters, a wayward father, and an enemy determined to see him pay for his sins. When their mother dies unexpectedly, twelve-year-old Easter Quillby and her six-year-old sister, Ruby, are shuffled into the foster care system in Gastonia, North Carolina, a little town not far from the Appalachian Mountains. But just as they settle into their new life, their errant father, Wade, an exminor league baseball player whom they haven't seen in years, suddenly reappears and steals them away in the middle of the night.Brady Weller, the girls' court-appointed guardian, begins looking for Wade, and quickly turns up unsettling information linking him to a multimillion-dollar robbery. But Brady isn't the only one hunting him. Also on the trail is Robert Pruitt, a mercurial man nursing a years-old vendetta, a man determined to find Wade and claim what he believes he is owed. The combination of Cash's evocative and intimate Southern voice and those of the alternating narrators, Easter, Brady, and Pruitt, brings this soulful story vividly to life. At once captivating and heartbreaking, This Dark Road to Mercy is a testament to the unbreakable bonds of family and the primal desire to outrun a past that refuses to let go.

This book sat on my shelves for the longest time. The title is dark, the cover is dark so my fingers never pulled it from my TBR until now. And really, it was an interesting read. It had a John Grisham-y feel to it. Secondary to the plot was the Sammy Sousa/ Mark McGwire home run race. How in the world did I forget about that!

plemmdog Wiley has a Facebook page and I love his posts...he‘s also organized an online book club 4y

Gripping novel following two state ward children and their once-deadbeat dad as they try to stay one step ahead of NC criminals. Evocatively set against the Sosa-McGwire Homerun chase of summer 1998.

I really enjoyed this novel. The writing was excellent and very evocative of the time and place where it was set. I read this one for the #litsyreadingchallenge2018, set in the place you were born. I wasn‘t born in Gastonia, but just across the border in SC. We had to go to Gastonia if we wanted to go to a mall when I was a kid. Really looking forward to reading more by this author!

intothehallofbooks Oh I LOVED this one!! 6y

So much love for this. Listen, I will read and reread all of Cash's books forever.

There is less of a grit lit feel here than in his previous book but I think it's an equally strong story. It's about falling from grace, growing up, redemption, and forgiveness. I thought I would connect most with Easter & Ruby, but I most identified with their father, Wade. His story spoke to my heart and also broke it.

The audio has three narrators and ✔️✔️✔️
