King Charles III
King Charles III | Mike Bartlett
10 posts | 3 read | 5 to read
The Queen is dead: after a lifetime of waiting, the prince ascends the throne. A future of power. But how to rule? Mike Bartlett's controversial new play explores the people beneath the crowns, the unwritten rules of our democracy, and the conscience of Britain's most famous family. Almeida Artistic Director Rupert Goold directs the World Premiere, following his acclaimed production of American Psycho. He is reunited with Mike Bartlett after their brilliant collaboration on Earthquakes in London at the National Theatre in 2010.

So Biden snubs our king and the coronation 👑 and Great Britain 🇬🇧 but choose to have a selfie with an ira terrorist 😏😕 perhaps it‘s time for the uk to take a step back from Biden and his delusional obligations

Just got this new book with a #numbertitle today! What's not to love about a play centered on the current royal family that takes place in the future but is written in the style of a Shakespearean history play? #futurehistory #riotgrams #theatrenerd #numbertitles

A #bookaboutpolitics is one of the only categories I have left in the @bookriot #readharderchallenge. But almost every political book makes me nostalgic, sad, or angry right now. Watching The Crown on Netflix inspired me to try this play as an alternative.

UwannaPublishme I heard great thing about The Hopefuls. It's on my #tbr list. 7y

Pickpick

Imagine Charles becomes king and, for morally justifiable reasons, refuses to sign a bad bill into law. Imagine the constitutional crisis that'd ensue, the reactions of Camilla, Will & Kate, Harry. Diana's ghost popping in. That's what this play does, & does well! The ending disappoints, though.

Susannah This is high on my TBR stack, though it's disappointing about the ending. I also found a recording of the production done on BBC radio that I'm looking forward to after I read the play. Have you heard of the radio production (or heard it?)? 8y
shawnmooney @Susannah I hadn't! I'll check it. The ending disappointed me cuz it seemed to reinforce the conventional tabloid wisdom about the royals, which the play had done such a great job of complicating up till then. 8y

In this fascinating near-future history play, King Charles refuses to sign the government's bill on moral principle, using powers vested in the sovereign but never used, provoking a political crisis.

thebookmagpie Sounds interesting! 8y

Now that I've outed myself as a royalty book buff, you shan't be surprised that this is my pick for the Reading Harder challenge #23 (Read a play), right?

jeff Once we get lists going on Litsy, I would love to see your top recs in royal. My mom is a royal family nerd and needs more books like this. 8y
shawnmooney It'd be my pleasure! I love to Queen out ;) 8y
ramyasbookshelf @jeff totally excited that litsy has lists in the pipeline :) @shawnmooney - what's a good starting point to enter this fabulous world? 8y
shawnmooney @ramyasbookshelf Maybe first time anyone has ever asked me that question! I've read widely from Q. Victoria to the present Queen, Elizabeth. Any historical period or particular royal of interest? It'll help me choose a recommendation. 8y
