Bukowski in a Sundress: Confessions from a Writing Life
Bukowski in a Sundress: Confessions from a Writing Life | Kim Addonizio
20 posts | 9 read | 90 to read
A dazzling, edgy, laugh-out-loud memoir from the award-winning poet and novelist that reflects on writing, drinking, dating, and more Kim Addonizio is used to being exposed. As a writer of provocative poems and stories, she has encountered success along with snark: one critic dismissed her as Charles Bukowski in a sundress. ( Why not Walt Whitman in a sparkly tutu? she muses.) Now, in this utterly original memoir in essays, she opens up to chronicle the joys and indignities in the life of a writer wandering through middle age. Addonizio vividly captures moments of inspiration at the writing desk (or bed) and adventures on the road from a champagne-and-vodka-fueled one-night stand at a writing conference to sparsely attended readings at remote Midwestern colleges. Her crackling, unfiltered wit brings colorful life to pieces like What Writers Do All Day, How to Fall for a Younger Man, and Necrophilia (that is, sexual attraction to men who are dead inside). And she turns a tender yet still comic eye to her family: her father, who sparked her love of poetry; her mother, a former tennis champion who struggled through Parkinson s at the end of her life; and her daughter, who at a young age chanced upon some erotica she had written for"Penthouse." At once intimate and outrageous, Addonizio s memoir radiates all the wit and heartbreak and ever-sexy grittiness that her fans have come to love and that new readers will not soon forget."

Hello, litten family!! I hope you all have been having an enjoyable holiday! The holidays are usually a struggle for me, but this Christmas was the best one I‘ve had in years. I‘m still kinda in awe of how it came through, of how I was content and grateful for what I have, not wanting something different or more. I owe several of you letters, responses, postcards and comments on books. I haven‘t forgotten and will send out some litten love soon!⬇️

slategreyskies The pic is of the Glowlight 3 Nook that I got myself for Christmas. It‘s so lightweight and portable. I foresee many hours of reading on it! :) 6y
Dragon Happy to hear you had a good Christmas 🎄 wishing you all the best for 2018 🎉 6y

julesG Happy Christmas! Your attitude sounds good, more people should approach the holidays like this. 6y
slategreyskies @Dragon thank you!! Sending you love and hugs and wishes for a bright new year for you too!! 🌟 6y
slategreyskies @TricksyTails you know, I really did have a happy Christmas. I felt at peace and calm and was able to relax in a way that is uncommon for me around the chaos of the holidays. *hugs* 6y
slategreyskies @Hooked_on_books me too!! I think that cover reeled me in more than the Nook did! 😂 6y
slategreyskies @MinDea Thanks!! Me too! I‘ve seen socks available with the same design from that company too. I may have to pick myself up a pair sometime. 😆 6y
slategreyskies @julesG I admit that my attitude is not always so great. I was blessed this year. I finally wanted to be exactly where I was. My sons and I were happy and healthy, and our day was peaceful and full of love. *hugs to you* 6y

What necrophilia is, really, is this: sexual obsession for men who are incapable of having a real relationship because they have no heart in their chest cavity. What they have is an empty socket that will electrocute you if you try to get close and touch it or maybe just point a flashlight that way to see what's wrong.

I searched my shelves and this was the best I could come up with for today's #MayBookFlowers theme of #sunshine. Not entirely inappropriate given the beautiful sundress-friendly weather in NYC right now, but still.

I seem drawn to memoirs by hard-living, heavy-drinking, once-privileged women writers.

Interesting collection of essays. I don't actually know any of her other work. Finished while at the gym. I've found that I can really only read on the bike.

In the TBR pile! Kim's biting sarcastic essays tackle middle age from a writer's perspective. From one night stands at conferences to empty book readings, the ups and downs of being a writer turns out to be pretty entertaining.

I wasn't able to read a whole lot for #24in48 but I did finish this book, which was a good read. It's more essays than memoir, which I didn't expect, but they were good: raw, honest, and funny. About her life and loves and her writing.

LauraJ As a big Bukowski fan, I've been sooooo tempted by this book. 8y

I'll be reading this for #24in48 (though I probably won't actually get to read much because...life). @24in48

Matilda I enjoyed this one- I always like loud "vulgar" ladies :) 8y
RebeccaH So far so good! I didn't expect it to be more essays than memoir, but that's fine. 8y

So much to live here! I've got at least three friends in mind who will need to borrow it as soon as I finish! I love finding a book and knowing exactly who it was written for and being able to pass it on to that person.
