Too Close to Breathe
Too Close to Breathe: A heart-stopping thriller, new for 2018 | Olivia Kiernan
15 posts | 12 read | 14 to read
Perfect for fans of Tana French, Jane Casey and Gillian Flynn 'Mesmerizing . . . murder, betrayal, and secret lives . . . Everything you need in a great thriller' Lisa Gardner 'Really slick . . . A proper page-turner' Jo Spain 'A writer you will read with your breath held' Jess Kidd TOO SOON TO SEE Polished. Professional. Perfect. Dead. Respected scientist Dr Eleanor Costello is found hanged in her immaculate home: the scene the very picture of a suicide. TOO LATE TO HIDE DCS Frankie Sheehan is handed the case, and almost immediately spots foul play. Sheehan, a trained profiler, is seeking a murderer with a talent for death. TOO CLOSE TO BREATHE As Frankie strives to paint a picture of the killer, and their victim, she starts to sense they are part of a larger, darker canvas, on which the lines between the two blur. Olivia Kiernan's debut is a bold, brilliant thriller that will keep you guessing and leave you breathless.

Frankie Sheehan is a profiler who carries her own burden of trauma from being knifed on the job. She‘s given what seems to be a standard suicide, but the case quickly morphs into serial murder and a killer who may be connected to the case where she was attacked. Hard nosed, obsessed, stubborn; wasn‘t sure I liked her but definitely did at the end! She serves the truth.

It‘s 3.45am on this cold July Saturday (very early) morning and I can‘t sleep. I‘m still stuck in this epic book slump, which is frustrating to say the least. If it‘s the right book for the particular time I can fly through it, but then I lose interest after and have to push myself to choose the next read. Driving me crazy. I‘ll try this thriller next and see if it sticks. I have a huge stack of books I‘ve only read the first chapter of though🤞

#BookMail Pt2 is April‘s BOTM pick, Too Close To Breathe. Another signed, numbered 1st Edition with sprayed edges, this time a lovely purple. A thriller by Olivia Kiernan, her debut novel, it follows DCS Frankie Sheehan as she investigates the supposed suicide of scientist Dr Eleanor Costello. Frankie quickly realizes it‘s a murder, but hunting the killer is harder than she suspects. Set in primarily in Dublin, fans of Tana French should love it.

Count me in, of course, for anything Criminal Minds like, but this one was even more fun. A spectacular debut! I can‘t wait for the next one! 👏🏻 The ending is exceptionally chilling after what you‘ve already read of Detective Sheehan‘s past.. 🍻🍻🍻🍻

Author Olivia Kiernan recommends some compelling novels by other Irish women crime writers in Electric Literature. Several of these are going on my to read list straight away

What a fantastic debut! I love DCI Sheehan; she's my kind of detective. Her past haunts her, she coming back on duty from an attack which has left her superiors a bit nervous about her taking on a high-profile case. As the body count grows, she's more determined than ever to clear this case. It's a real whodunit that leads you in several directions. I found the characters believable, and Sheehan‘s kick-butt, yet flawed personality is a winner!

This is the first book in the Frankie Sheehan series. Four months ago Frankie was after a killer and almost died at his hands. Now she is back at work and is called in to investigate a suicide. But was it really a suicide? As they investigate the case they found out more and more about the case and more and more bodies turn up. Who is killing everyone?
