Fauna and Family
Fauna and Family: More Durrell Family Adventures on Corfu | Gerald Durrell
1 post | 2 read
Fauna and Family, also known as The Garden of the Gods, is the third in Durrells Corfu trilogy that begins with his beloved classic, My Family and Other Animals and continues with Birds, Beasts and Relatives. In his foreword to Fauna and Family, Durrell confessed that in the first two books, I had left out a number of incidents and characters that I would have liked to have described, and I have attempted to repair this omission in this book . . . I hope that it might give the same pleasure to its readers as apparently its predecessors have done, as for me it portrays a very important part of my life . . . which is a truly happy and sunlit childhood.

I‘ve put together a few thoughts on options - since I realized instead of “happy fiction” most were “happy non-fiction” 😆 - I went way over 3 on choices!

Don‘t hesitate to say if none of them appeal! I can pull more 😊

Chrissyreadit I realized I read Cotillion 5 years ago- apparently my brain fog strikes again! the good news it will be like reading it for the first time. looking up books you posted now. 4mo
Chrissyreadit I would choose Heyer first. I have not read any of the Corfu books- i need to read the first one for sure so that one would be the only one i do not prefer. I faintly remember Understood Betsy and according to goodreads i have it 5 stars. I know i read it with my kids about 10 or 12 years ago 🤣 4mo
mabell @Chrissyreadit Ha! I did wonder about that 🤣 I haven‘t read the Corfu books either - I didn‘t realize there were multiple! 4mo

mabell It isn‘t letting me tag the other books, so I‘m sorry about making it tough to check them out! 4mo
TheAromaofBooks Oooo these all sound fun, although like @Chrissyreadit I don't like to read books out of order!! Understood Betsy is one of my VERY favorites and it has been a few years since my last read so I am always up to revisit. Strangely, I hadn't thought about finding some happy nonfiction until you mentioned it, and now I'm wondering if we should do a round with that as our focus sometime!! 4mo
Chrissyreadit @TheAromaofBooks @mabell @julieclair I am loving all the ways Happy Fiction or non fiction occurs 4mo
julieclair Ooohhh… Summer at Tiffany has been on my TBR forever, so that would be my first choice! Understood Betsy and Powder and Patch are tied for second. I read A Fine Romance about 6 months ago and LOVED it! A Year in Provence would be a re-read, too. But I‘d be fine with either of them. I agree about the Durrell, so I‘d prefer not to read that one. 4mo
mabell @Chrissyreadit @TheAromaofBooks @julieclair Thank you for weighing in! I‘ve been trying to think of any others, and I also thought of Mandy by Julie Andrews Edwards. So between that one, Powder & Patch, Understood Betsy and Summer at Tiffany, what would be your vote? 4mo
Chrissyreadit powder and Patch will be my first choice but honestly any of them ok. 4mo
TheAromaofBooks So tentatively - Cotillion in January ( @Chrissyreadit ), @julieclair 's pick in February - I can't find the post and apparently didn't write down which book we decided on 😂 - Powder & Patch in March ( @mabell ), and Wind in the Willows for April (me)? Thoughts? 4mo
Chrissyreadit sounds good. 4mo
julieclair @TheAromaofBooks @mabell @chrissyreadit I don‘t think we decided on my book…. I kind of lost track of it! 🤦‍♀️ I‘ve just tagged y‘all in a separate post so I won‘t lose it again… 🤪 4mo
julieclair And I like the plan you suggest! 👍 4mo
julieclair If we ever decide to do a non-fiction round, I would suggest 4mo
Chrissyreadit @julieclair @TheAromaofBooks @mabell I would also enjoy a nonfiction round 4mo
mabell Thank you for pulling it all together @TheAromaofBooks ! Sounds good @Chrissyreadit @julieclair 4mo
TheAromaofBooks @mabell @julieclair @Chrissyreadit - Yay!! So Cotillion has 20 chapters. Do you think I should break up the discussion sections on SG into one per chapter, per two chapters, per five chapters...? Just have one big discussion at the end? It's 20 chapters across ~350pgs in my edition, so 15-20pgs/chapter. 4mo
Chrissyreadit I really am ok with whatever you want to try- we can always change it if we want to try something different. 4mo
mabell @TheAromaofBooks Maybe 2-4 chapters? That way we can break it up more? 4mo
TheAromaofBooks @mabell @Chrissyreadit @julieclair - Okay, here is the link!! https://app.thestorygraph.com/readalongs/b9a3dbe6-89c5-4ea8-acb9-4e507782c3ee I set it up for every two chapters and we can see how that works. I forgot to give us a little “introduction“ section, but we can comment on the Ch 1-2 part before you start if you like!! I'm really interested to try this out and see how it works!! 4mo
Chrissyreadit @TheAromaofBooks i‘m struggling to figure out how to join 4mo
Chrissyreadit @TheAromaofBooks do you need to invite us? I love Storygraph but it is not always user friendly (yet) 4mo
TheAromaofBooks @Chrissyreadit - I think what may have happened was that I used 2023 instead of 2024 so it thought the Readalong was already over 😂 Please try clicking the link again and see if a Join button now appears!! 4mo
mabell I‘m in! Thanks so much for setting it up, Sarah! @TheAromaofBooks 4mo
Chrissyreadit also… apparently I read Cotillion in 2019!!!due to brain fog it will be a completely new experience 💗 @TheAromaofBooks @mabell @julieclair 4mo
TheAromaofBooks Also, I think I am going to try to read 2 chapters a day ish so I can comment as I go along, but I think as long as we all aim to finish by the end of the month, we don't have to stick to a strict schedule!! @Chrissyreadit @mabell @julieclair 4mo
mabell @TheAromaofBooks @Chrissyreadit @julieclair I‘ll try to do that too! But best laid plans… 🤣 4mo
