Final Gifts: Understanding the Special Awareness, Needs, and Communications of the Dying
Final Gifts: Understanding the Special Awareness, Needs, and Communications of the Dying | Maggie Callanan, Patricia Kelley
4 posts | 5 read | 7 to read
In this moving and compassionate classic--now updated with new material from the authors--hospice nurses Maggie Callanan and Patricia Kelley share their intimate experiences with patients at the end of life, drawn from more than twenty years' experience tending the terminally ill. Through their stories we come to appreciate the near-miraculous ways in which the dying communicate their needs, reveal their feelings, and even choreograph their own final moments; we also discover the gifts--of wisdom, faith, and love--that the dying leave for the living to share. Filled with practical advice on responding to the requests of the dying and helping them prepare emotionally and spiritually for death, Final Gifts shows how we can help the dying person live fully to the very end.

My mom was given this book by a friend in 2009 when my Poppy went into hospice. She and I both read it. Written by hospice nurses, it was so helpful in understanding what my grandfather was going through in his last days. I have recommended this book often and I cannot recommend it enough.

Pickpick

This may seem an odd choice for #AdventRecommends, but every year I seem to know someone who loses a loved one near the holiday. Ten years ago the day before Thanksgiving, my grandfather entered hospice when his lung cancer metastasized to his brain. He died December 4. My mom and I spent that period working, visiting him, & reading this book. I‘ve never read something or knew there was something that could be so helpful in understanding ⬇️

megnews the death process. It was remarkably eerie to read things described on the page as fairly universal as my Poppy went through the process. It was helpful in understanding, removing fears, and letting go. I recommend this book to those losing a loved one. It brings some peace to the process. 4y
