Fifteen Lanes
Fifteen Lanes | S. J. Laidlaw
5 posts | 5 read | 1 to read
Set in the fifteen lanes that comprise Mumbai's red light district Fifteen Lanes compellingly explores class, race and gender through the alternating voices of two teenage protagonists. Noor lives in a Mumbai brothel with her mother and siblings and is immensely grateful for the chance to go to school, hoping it will help her escape being sold into the sex trade. Grace is the Canadian daughter of the CEO of one of Mumbai's largest banks. When the two eventually meet at a NGO support centre for women and children, their lives and perspectives are irrevocably changed.

4/5🌟
A heartbreaking and absorbing read!
I enjoyed the characters, I felt they were very realistic. Noor was my favorite. Just because her story was so wrought with hardship and she was so strong willed and kind still.
I found this story very real and eye opening. Classified as YA it definitely had elements that were not YA

Haven't been a teen in a while, but pretty sure they don't type like this these days?
I see this kind of thing in a lot of YA and it's so cringe.

⭐️⭐️⭐️Set in Mumbai and deals with India's underage sex trade and poverty from one perspective, and bullying and slut shaming from another. Noor's chapters were what kept me reading, while I found Grace's to be lacking in comparison. Would recommend looking at the author's note before reading.
