Set in the heart of Left-Bank Paris, this is the story of Paul, a lonely, quiet boy who makes an astonishing discovery and confronts that brutal turning point in adolescence when he learns he must leave the privileges of naivety behind. Thirteen-year-old Paul is a lovable but unloved boy on the vulnerable cusp of manhood. Paul lives in Paris, in a world of privilege where beauty dominates, adults are intent on their own satisfaction, and everything looks perfect. There's nowhere to get dirty, or so it appears. His mother is glamorous and powerful, distracted by a younger lover and her own fear of aging. His wealthy father is desperately seeking to assuage his endless discontent. Paul lives between the two apartments of his broken family, looked after by a Filipino babysitter who hasn't seen her own children in years. When Paul meets Scarlett, a beguiling classmate, he uncovers the cruel gulf between the world as it is and how he imagined it to be. It's only a matter of time before Paul witnesses a shocking event and inherits a burden he's far too young to shoulder. A dazzling coming-of-age story, I Love You Too Much is a devastating literary debut born from the saying, Je t'aime trop: a distinctly French expression of excessive love. In a world of abundance, a Paris where parents don't always mean what they say, Paul must look beyond his glamorous home to find a love that's real.

Blimey. This writer REALLY wants you to know she‘s lived in Paris. Every page has intense descriptions of how streets link up and exactly where different shops are, lots of untranslated French, and references to department stores and supermarkets we‘re meant to infer something about the characters from when I don‘t know many Parisian department stores off the top of my head. I‘d understand it if it was a French book but this is an English ⏬

Emilymdxn Woman writing in English. I had to have Wikipedia open on my phone to know whether ‘she was like a waitress from Hotel Costes‘ was a good thing or not. Melodramatic dialogue, and a man who has sex with men becomes well adjusted and gets a girlfriend after going to therapy............. 4y
MayJasper Wow I won't be queuing up for this then 4y
JamieArc Oy. I was all on board with the Paris descriptions but any sort of conversion therapy is a hard no. 4y
Emilymdxn @JamieArc I think I would have liked the Paris description if it had illuminated anything for me about the characters, or even Paris, but it was just like ‘he took this road then turned into this road then turned right down that road and went west for 500 yards‘. The description felt more like listening to a sat nav than a story really. And yes, high key homophobic 4y
AnneCecilie Regarding the Costes reference I think that depends on how you view the waitresses that work there. The waitresses there are tall, skinny and looks like models. 4y

Not my favourite themes..teenage angst, consumerism, obsession and excessive wealth, but Drake brings some humanity to the table too in this coming of age story set in Paris. It was a short, dramatic tale, that was a lot darker than I was prepared for. The characters behave badly, self interest and narcissism rules, which left a bad taste at the end of the novel. A bleak experience overall looking through the world of this 13 year old boy.

Emilymdxn I‘ve got this on my shelf :/ I was taken in by the gorgeous hardback cover and wonder how much I‘ll enjoy it now 5y

Finished this one in Malta. I loved Paul as an uncomfortable protagonist and felt it was a good move to filter things through his perspective. A bit too symmetrical a conclusion, but I put it down to first book cleverness.

Episode 20 features @aliciadrake75, author of the Paris-set coming of age novel I Love You Too Much. We discuss the Frenchness of her novel and its themes – among them loneliness, the ache to belong, and what happens when beauty fades. https://britlitblog.com/2018/06/28/brit-lit-podcast-episode-20-with-alicia-drake...

Speaking of birthdays, I bought this one for my OH on his birthday last week. Feeling a little guilty, as maybe a small part of me wanted him to read it quickly so that I could go next. 😬

Celebrating pay day the only way I know how 🛍📚☺️

Been a horrible week mental health wise 😞 three major panic attacks about 3 DIFFERENT types of cancer I have 0 symptoms of. Tiny mark in mouth after I bit it turned into a huge illness research session (I‘m ridiculous). So pleased my office is closing for Easter tomorrow, I desperately need some time to relax and escape. Books are my solace and distraction, don‘t know where I‘d be without them

AmyReadsAlot I am sorry about your week but I am glad that you can find solace between the covers of a book. 🤗 6y

Sophoclessweetheart I‘m so sorry to hear this. I wouldn‘t say I suffer from anxiety but I know how you feel with the illness research for tiniest thing. I‘m forever paranoid about such things. Stay strong and relax xxx 6y

This one will punch you in the gut and not let go! Thirteen-year-old Paul lives in Paris and is shuffled between divorced parents who are so self-absorbed they have no time to show him love. Dark secrets, the disparity between wealth and poverty, the innocence of young love are all explored in this lovely, albeit dark novel that will resonate for a long time. #NetGalley
