An Arab-American college student struggles to live with epilepsy in this starkly colored and deeply-cutting graphic novel. Isaac wants nothing more than to be a functional college studentbut managing his epilepsy is an exhausting battle to survive. He attempts to maintain a balancing act between his seizure triggers and his day-to-day schedule, but he finds that nothingnot even his medicationseems to work. The doctors wont listen, the schoolwork keeps piling up, his family is in denial about his condition, and his social life falls apart as he feels more and more isolated by his illness. Even with an unexpected new friend by his side, so much is up against him that Isaac is starting to think his epilepsy might be unbeatable. Based on the authors own experiences as an epileptic, Mis(h)adra is a boldly visual depiction of the daily struggles of living with a misunderstood condition in todays hectic and uninformed world.

So I've been having some rough mental health days, but finding and reading this has made them more tolerable. It will be in my #selfcare book rotation from now on. What books to you read when you are having a rough day?

Pickpick

Genderqueer Arab American author Ata fictionalized their own struggles with illness as a college student, using manga-like art in an impressive, moving #graphicnovel. In an interview with Comics Journal, Ata explains that misadra means “I can‘t “ and mishadra means “seizure” in their family‘s Arabic dialect. #LGBTQ

The visuals in this graphic novel are compelling. What the author is portraying is a unique form of non-convulsive epilepsy (CPSE) that is often described as a long-lasting dreamlike state. As I read, I was often reminded of the equally unusual way that David B portrayed illness in Epileptic.

First up on Claire's Pancake House Roadtrip:

"Isaac wants nothing more than to be a functional college student -- but managing his epilepsy is an exhausting battle to survive. He attempts to maintain a balancing act between his seizure triggers and his day-to-day schedule, but he finds that nothing--not even his medication--seems to work." (see listing for second half of synopsis)

Based on author's own experience with epilepsy. Art looks A+!

Misadra - Arabic for seizure
Mishadra - Arabic for “I can‘t”
Mis(h)adra - the physical and mental struggle of a queer, Arab-American college student to make it through each day without triggering an epileptic seizure. He loses friends, falls behind in school, and is disbelieved by his doctors and parents. A scary true story (based on the author‘s epilepsy) about what toll it can take to be different in a way people don‘t understand.

minkyb Holy moley. This sounds extraordinary. 6y

(ARC is printed in black and white, but the actual hardcover is in a bright color palette of neons and looks very pretty. I‘m sure the color version is easier to follow because the art was designed for it, and gets abstract with some psychedelic visual depictions of a seizure experience.)
