I think this is a great book for kids. It teaches them the emotions behind feeling different and alone

The Ugly Duckling by Jerry Pinkney is a Caldecott winning traditional literature picture book about a little duckling who is considered “ugly” compared to the others, but then proves them all wrong when he turns into a beautiful swan. This story would be perfect for read alouds with your students to help them fully grasp the message of the story.

NicoleCumbo A UDL strategy that works well with this picture book is strategy 8.3 (foster collaboration and community) and an EL strategy that works well is strategy 3 (encourage self talk and positive thinking). Https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6jl99n3tgA is a read aloud of this picture book with a teacher candidate.. just like us! #ucflae3414sp18 6y

This book about a duckling being unwanted and goes out into the world and finds out who he really is. The whole time the ugly duckling was a swan, he was different from anyone else. This story is about acceptance which is key for young children to understand. This is a good traditional literature book I would use for RA so that you could also have a discussion about this topic. UDL 1.3 offer alternatives for visual information.

brittanyg You could show images of different types of birds and do a compare and contrast activity. Or you can do this activity with the students. https://www.education.com/worksheet/article/the-ugly-duckling-story/ this is an activity to have students recreate the story to show there understanding of the story. EL 3 encourage positive thinking which can be about being accepted in the world no matter who you are. #UCFLAE3414F17 7y
AndreaC This is a great classic story with an awesome message! 7y
DrSpalding Nice EL alignment with promoting positivity. Traditional literature can be used to teach many lessons. This example is one that could easily be compared with other versions of this classic folk lore. 7y
