Side by Side is a Fantasy (F) picture book written by Rachel Bright and illustrated by Debi Gliori. Side by Side is a story about a young Little Mouseling that would get left out because of how small she was. Throughout the story, the mouseling asks “is there nobody here who will stay by my side?” As other animals answered, the mouseling was finding that she couldn‘t hangout with the frogs, the squirrel, the owl, and so on. Until one day... ⬇️

AmeliaS21 The little black vole and the mouseling became best friends. This story has a great message for students about friendship! I think this book would be great for partner reading (PR) allowing two students to read about friendship together. The resource I chose is friendship games. I figured I could tie these games to this book. https://www.healthline.com/health/parenting/friendship-activities #4 ⬇️ (edited) 6y

Rachel Bright and Debi Gliori‘s book Side by Side is about a mouseling who has been left by her older brothers and sisters. She must go on a quest to find a friend- her true friend. Along the way she meets other animals from her home Wintermouse Woods who would be her friend, but she continues along. But she is in for a surprise when a quiet vole reveals he‘s been by her side the whole time.

DeannaT96 This book is great for a whole class read aloud in the first few days or even weeks of class. It can be followed by a short activity on friendship where students fill out a venn diagram of similarities and differences between themselves and a friend. 7y

The theme of this book is friendship. It meets UCF‘s Cultural Competencies: C1, A2, A7, S4, and S5 as well as UDL: 8.3 and 9.3. The EL strategies are 16, 45, and 46.

JocelynNolton This seems like a really good book to have in the classroom because it is about friendship and as we know... that is very important to little kids. I also like how you incorporated stuff animals into your picture. 7y
DrSpalding The venn diagram helps students with classifying information. This is wise. As previously noted in class, I think this makes for a great read along with Quackers by Liz Wong. 7y
