The Dance of the Seagull
The Dance of the Seagull | Andrea Camilleri
3 posts | 6 read | 5 to read
The latest from the New York Times bestselling author of The Potter's Field, winner of the Crime Writers' Association's International Dagger Award, and The Age of Doubt With Inspector Montalbano's most recent outings hitting the New York Times bestseller list, Andrea Camilleri's darkly refined Italian mysteries have become favorites of American crime novel fans. This latest installment finds Montalbano in search of his missing right-hand man. Before leaving for vacation with Livia, Montalbano witnesses a seagull doing an odd dance on the beach outside his home, when the bird suddenly drops dead. Stopping in at his office for a quick check before heading off, he notices that Fazio is nowhere to be found and soon learns that he was last seen on the docks, secretly working on a case. Montalbano sets out to find him and discovers that the seagull's dance of death may provide the key to understanding a macabre world of sadism, extortion, and murder.

Love Montalbano. If anyone wants a light, engaging police detective series with plenty of humour I thoroughly recommend the Montalbano Series by Andrea Camilleri.

CarolynM Agreed, but start with the early ones. Some of the later ones have got a bit strange and rely on an already established understanding of the characters. 5y
Crazeedi Another series I need to look into! 5y
Freespirit I need to look into it too 5y

gradcat Omigod, you may be the only person I know who reads Camilleri...I think I love you. 🥰😂 5y
writerlibrarian The food, the crew at the police station, the ☀️ filled Sicily. i love this series. 5y
Andrew65 @gradcat Soulmates 😍 🤣🤣🤣. I read the first one a few years ago when I found a copy on a campsite and fell in love with the books. Now read the first 17 and just got book 18 out of the library. A great series that needs to be read more widely. Very quick reads too. @Crazeedi @Freespirit 5y
Andrew65 @writerlibrarian Certainly give you a strong feel of the place. Some books have a heavy focus on music, these ones the food! (edited) 5y
gradcat @Andrew65 Wow! Well, you‘re much farther along than I am...I think I‘m on number 7?!? Maybe 🤷🏽‍♀️ 5y
Crazeedi @gradcat @Andrew65 these sound like Donna Leon's series set in Venice, you should read the first one and see, there are like 20some 5y
Andrew65 @gradcat You‘ve got some good ones ahead of you. Just checked started reading them in 2011. 5y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi That is a Series I do want to check out. Thanks 😊👍 (edited) 5y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 welcome! If you read, I'll be interested in your opinion! 5y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi Will let you know, put in a request for the library to buy the first one as an ebook. 5y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 just fyi they get better as they go, I just checked and there are like28 books I'm reading her latest. The character development she does is great. You definitely need to start at beginning. 5y
gradcat @Crazeedi @Andrew65 Just FYI, as someone who reads both Camilleri & Leon...I think both give such a great evocation of place...Leon is writing in Venice—a place I‘ve always wanted to visit!—and the reader learns so much about how they deal with the water there. I think both of you would appreciate the other series. Camilleri has more humor, I think. But about Venice & water, I especially remember 5y
Crazeedi @gradcat I love her interaction between Elletra and Guido and Patta. I am definitely going to get this new series to start, because I am reading the newest one in Leon's series, number 28 or so, thank you!!! 5y
gradcat @crazeedi You‘re so very welcome, also, I hope you are doing well 🥰 5y

This isn't my usual bookish fare but I enjoy the Montalbano TV series, with the subtitles, so thought I'd give the audiobook a try. Well, I missed the Italian language (though I only understand a meagre pinch of it!) but it was nicely plotted and the familiar characters were all present so for the most part I was happy. I'll put a couple of disgruntlements under a spoiler alert in the comments. 3*

quietlycuriouskate Disgruntlement no.1: towards the end more than one character expresses "traditional" views towards a trans character. It may have been in-keeping but I don't like it. Disgruntlement no.2: Montalbano relies on having a kind of vision to solve the case. It was a bit odd, in the circumstances, and stretched credibility a bit thin. 5y
rockpools I thoroughly approve of disgruntlements in reviews! And no. 2 is one of those things that bugs me too... 5y
CarolynM I've read most of these and some of the later ones have got a bit weird with the Inspector's mind operating in strange and mysterious ways. I still enjoy them anyway🙂 5y

Another great book in the Inspector Montalbano Series, these are such quirky reads with a great central group of characters. I do love Montalbano, but never understand why he is still with Livia. He certainly has strange relationships with the other women he meets. A great plot line in this one too. I do thoroughly recommend these quick reads.

CarolynM More to the point, why is Livia still with him? I think they must enjoy fighting with one another. I'm very glad I don't live like that!😂 6y
Andrew65 @CarolynM Yes, I think you hit the nail on the head. They are always arguing. I couldn‘t live like that. (edited) 6y
