Do I Make Myself Clear?
Do I Make Myself Clear?: Why Writing Well Matters | Harold Evans
3 posts | 4 read | 24 to read
A wise and entertaining look at the struggle for clarity in modern journalism by one of the greatest newspaper editors of our time. Harry Evans has edited everything from the urgent files of battlefield reporters to the complex thought processes of Henry Kissinger. He's even been knighted for his services to journalism. In DO I MAKE MYSELF CLEAR?, he brings his indispensable insight to us all in his definite guide to writing well. The right words are oxygen to our ideas, but the digital era, with all of its TTYL, LMK, and WTF, has been cutting off that oxygen flow. The compulsion to be precise has vanished from our culture, and in writing of every kind we see a trend towards more--more speed and more information but far less clarity. Evans provides practical examples of how editing and rewriting can make for better communication, even in the digital age. DO I MAKE MYSELF CLEAR? is an essential text, and one that will provide every writer an editor at his shoulder.

If you are at all interested in how to communicate in a clear, unambiguous way this book is one you should read. Witty and informative, Harold Evans, one of the great British journalists of modern times explains how clarity in writing makes such an important difference as to how a reader understands the news. Great book.

My current NF read - almost finished. Some of this book is down right confounding. It is staggering the wasted energy spent reading imprecise communication. Less lawyers and accounts - more editors!

#TBRtemptation post 5! Released in May. A entertaining guide to writing proper English from one of the world's top newspaper editors--he's been knighted for his services to journalism! He wants to counter the trend of more information and less clarity by redirecting us to greater precision in our writing. Considered a new essential text on writing guidance. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎
