Yo Soy Muslim
Yo Soy Muslim: A Father's Letter to His Daughter | Mark Gonzales
10 posts | 13 read | 4 to read
From Muslim and Latino poet Mark Gonzales comes a touching and lyrical picture book about a parent who encourages their child to find joy and pride in all aspects of their multicultural identity. Dear little one, know you are wondrous. A child of crescent moons, a builder of mosques, a descendant of brilliance, an ancestor in training. Written as a letter from a father to his daughter, Yo Soy Muslim is a celebration of social harmony and multicultural identities. The vivid and elegant verse, accompanied by magical and vibrant illustrations, highlights the diversity of the Muslim community as well as Indigenous identity. A literary journey of discovery and wonder, Yo Soy Muslim is sure to inspire adults and children alike.

What a wonderful book! A father advises his daughter on what it means to be Muslim and how to hold her head high against adversity and prejudice. Add a Spanish background to the story, and you have a beautiful blend of cultures and positivism. My favorite quote: No matter what they say, know you are wondrous. A child of crescent moons, a builder of mosques, a descendant of brilliance, an ancestor in training.” Letter Y for #BBRC #A2Z

A beautiful picture book inspired by the words of a father to his daughter. If you‘re looking to expand your library to include more Muslim voices, this is a great pick for younger readers #weneeddiversebooks

This was the next book Parker received from the little feminist book club. She really liked this one a lot. It‘s basically in Splanglish, going back and forth between English and Spanish. We used this to talk about religion and how everyone doesn‘t believe in the same thing. #yosoymuslim #littlefeminist #littlefeministbookclub #diverselibrary #childrensbooks

This picture book about being both Muslim and Latinx is such a great read. It is a lovely story about loving yourself and your faith and your heritage. This was just super touching. Fabulous art too. Highly recommended.

Beautiful! Written as a message to his daughter, Gonzales tells her to speak up for her beliefs and her heritage. He teaches her how to listen for and see God in nature and what to say when someone asks where she came from and who she is. And the illustrations are just gorgeous! #raisingareader

Gotta love it when your library is on top of #diversebooks and #muslimshelfspace and you don't even need to request your TBR list! 😍
