"No one who has read it has failed to love it."—Nicholas Lezard, Guardian "Szerb belongs with the master novelists of the twentieth century."—Paul Bailey, Daily Telegraph ANXIOUS TO PLEASE his bourgeois father, Mihaly has joined the family firm in Budapest. Pursued by nostalgia for his bohemian youth, he seeks escape in marriage to Erzsi, not realising that she has chosen him as a means to her own rebellion. On their honeymoon in Italy Mihaly "loses" his bride at a provincial station and embarks on a chaotic and bizarre journey that leads him finally to Rome. There all the death-haunted and erotic elements of his past converge, and he, like Erzsi, has finally to choose.

"Journey by Moonlight": ?????
The protagonist is lost because the common expectations for an adult don't work for him and it's questioned whether they actually work for anyone. Many options of escape are shown, all have their downsides, but somehow everyone has to deal with life (and death) as good as they can.

Got some yummy pastries from the Hungarian bakery, note the paprika on the napkin.?

Just a blurb about how much I love the #foodandlit challenge. Every month my horizon expands to more of the world's literature, history, culture and of course various delicacies🥰

This book is another example, I don't think I would have found it otherwise. It feels very modern for a product of the 30s.
It's also quite refreshing to read from and less about this decade, without any artificial foreshadowing of the war.

#Alphabetgame #LetterU @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

I haven't read a lot of books whose title starts with U, but out of the few I have, this one by Antal Szerb stands out. When I read it, I wrote in my Goodreads review that it was quite philosophical and had brilliant dialogues. Definitely due for a reread.
(I tagged the English translation.)

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Thank you for playing 📚 2y

This book is sublime, honest, sensual and funny. It's a dark comedy with an unreliable narrator, Mihály, who finds himself in absurd situations. The characters are realistic but their stories feel like fantasies, adding to the dreamlike feel of the book.

Antal Szerb was killed in The Holocaust, adding to the books' poignancy.

3⭐️ What a weird book! Mihaly is stuck in his past; he‘s such a distracted person that he keeps avoiding the present. I can relate to, and totally understand Mihaly‘s obsession about the past. I love my childhood, and I‘ve never grown up... because as you all know, adulting is hard! 😆 I was probably not in the right mood when I read this book. I‘d love to revisit this to get deeper into the layers

Wharton and Manning have been with me for weeks!!! I‘m enjoying both at this super slow pace 😸

batsy Are you enjoying the Manning? It seems like one best to be read slowly :) 4y
sisilia @batsy Slow build up in the first book I almost lost interest, but I got hooked close to the end... and it gets more enjoyable after that. I‘m now loving it 😄 4y

-De Mihály nem olyan, mint más ember. Azért is mentem hozzá.
-Jól is jártál vele. Nem szeretem az olyan embereket akik nem olyanok, mint más ember. Más ember is elég undorító. Hát még az, aki nem olyan.

Before my recent trip to #Hungary I was looking for some recommendations for #HungarianLiterature .

Look what just popped up in Facebook! Thank you, #BookWitty . I‘ve added their list to my TBR.

@Gezemice

Tag any other Hungarian friends!

Gezemice Very cool! I have not been home for decades and would actually need some recommendations for newer literature. 6y
Libby1 @Gezemice - I forgot to respond to one of your earlier comments. Sorry! I hope you find some recommendations here that will be of interest to you. 6y
