When Planet Earth Was New is a non-fiction book (NF) written by James Gladstone and illustrated by Katherine Diemert. This book discusses what Earth was like when it was first created and how it has evolved since then. Personally, science is my least favorite subject but even I enjoyed this book as it utilized very simple language and was easy to comprehend. In addition, it has STEM connections to biology, geology, evolution, etc.

Nkaufmann ...so I believe it would be very useful in the classroom as it helps students with their reading skills while also learning about science.

This book could be great for storytelling (S) because students will be able to tell the story of Earth using illustrations or digital media which will be a fun science and reading activity. Moreover, this book allows the students to learn scientific terms and get a better understanding of our Earth as a whole.

Nkaufmann The UDL principle 7.2 regarding optimizing relevance, value, and authenticity and the EL principle 9 regarding teaching note-taking strategies: T-lists, timelines, etc. could both be met by this picture book. This book is very relevant as it can be used for two content areas: science and language arts. Plus, I think it would be useful to have students take notes on Earth and what it was like back then and how it is today.

DrSpalding Books that have a STEM focus are valuable additions to your classroom library. This one obviously works well with science. That is an interesting strategy to storytelling using digital media… this could be visually engaging! Try it. 4y

A very short, gorgeously illustrated picture book about the evolution of the earth. I always like to find approachable scientific books for children, and this is a great one for the youngest listeners.

5🌟. this is a book about evolution. It is simple and easy to understand. It goes from the birth of the earth until today. While the story is readable for bedtime, for those more curious it includes a glossary, and a more detailed timeline in the back. But the best thing about this book are the illustrations. It doesn‘t matter if they are dark and violent, or bright and cheery, they are the cherry on the top of this read.
