Locating Nordic Noir: From Beck to the Bridge (2017)
Locating Nordic Noir: From Beck to the Bridge (2017) | Anne Marit Waade, Kim Toft Hansen
5 posts
This book is a comprehensive study of Nordic Noir television drama from the 1990's until today. The authors introduce the history of contemporary Nordic Noir from the perspective of place, production and location studies. The chapters include readings of well-known television crime dramas such as Beck, The Killing, Trapped and The Bridge as well as a range of other important Nordic Noir cases. The authors position the development of Nordic Noir in the global market for popular television drama and place the international attention towards Nordic crime dramas within regional development of drama production in Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Iceland. Consequently, Nordic Noir is read as both a transnational financial and creative phenomenon and as a local possibility for community building. Offering a comprehensible, scholarly and methodologically original approach to the popularity of Nordic television crime dramas, this volume is aimed at readers with an interest in crime drama as well as scholars and students of television drama.

This is how it starts then - 2020! Murder and crime in the Nordics ? We will start with these three series in January. Läckberg 10 books, Kepler 7 books, Adler-Olsen 8 books. Start looking for the first books in the series, so that you‘ll be ready in January.
Everyone is welcome to join our buddy reads! #YearOfNordicNoir

Tove_Reads FYI Joona Linna (Kepler‘s series) has Finnish roots (the name is fully Finnish). Nice to have a bit of Finnish flavour 🙂 And for once I can get all books from pretty much every library here, and in many languages. All of these are as e-books here as well, so it almost feels too easy 😂🤪 5y
Andrew65 Just to make people aware Keeper of Lost Causes by Jussi Adler-Olsen is also Published under the title Mercy. I know our library has it under this title. 5y
EadieB @Tove_Reads These series make up 25 books and we need 36 books for the year so for those that want to read Jo Nesbo, we have time to read some of his books next year too. @Andrew65 (edited) 5y
See All 30 Comments
Tove_Reads @eadieb Once we‘re done with Joona Linna we could start with Harry Hole? 5y
EadieB @Tove_Reads ok sounds good! 5y
Tove_Reads http://www.salomonssonagency.se/antti-tuomainen Can you get these books (end of the page) at your libraries? @eadieb @andrew65 5y
EadieB @Tove_Reads No my library does not have them 5y
Tove_Reads @eadieb He‘s supposed to be superb. Never read any of his. Probably have to soon. 5y
EadieB @Tove_Reads I'll ask my library to order his books. 5y
Tove_Reads @eadieb I believe The Healer is quite famous. He just came out with his latest this month. 5y
Crazeedi @Tove_Reads @EadieB @Andrew65 thanks for coordinating, I'm going to search for these. 5y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads My library has three of Antti Tuomainen‘s books. Not The Healer but a library 25 miles away that I joined on Saturday does have it. @EadieB @Crazeedi (edited) 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Yes happy to add Jo Nesbo on. @Tove_Reads 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Yes I think it was @AnneCecilie that wanted to read some Nesbo. @Tove_Reads 5y
AnneCecilie That‘s correct, I want to read some Nesbø @EadieB @Andrew65 I‘ll probably join in on the others too, the library has both Kepler and Lackberg. And I want to find out what is selling like crazy in Norway @Tove_Reads Do you have the Swedish title for Adler-Olsen? I hope that will make it easier to find the correct title. 5y
Andrew65 @AnneCecilie Kvinnan i rummet? 5y
AnneCecilie @Andrew65 Thank you for the link. I have now found the book. Your suggestion may be the Swedish title, I was hoping it would help me towards the Norwegian one. Sometimes the difference between a Norwegian title and an English title, is huge. 5y
gradcat @Tove_Reads @Andrew65 @Crazeedi Omigod—I‘ve read ALL of these...will you guys promise to keep me posted on what you read even though I won‘t be rereading these? I hope to be able to join you guys at some point. ♥️ 5y
Tove_Reads @gradcat Yes! We will continue with Nesbo, whom you‘ve also read, but the others we haven‘t decided upon yet, so there‘s your chance to read someone knew with us! I believe we start reading him in August, and someone else in September. Who would you like to read? Plus, if you want to you can join in on our Follett buddy read! 5y
gradcat Do you mean next year in August? Color me confused (usual state of affairs here 😂), but I‘m not sure if you guys have already started or are planning for the future. There is one (maybe two, can‘t remember) Nesbo standalones that I‘ve yet to read. Anyway, I‘ll just take my cues from you guys, and be happy with that! 😊 (edited) 5y
Tove_Reads @gradcat Yes, Augusr 2020. Kepler is 7 books, so we will finish that series in July. We‘ll be done with Adler-Olsen in August, Läckberg in October. 5y
gradcat @Tove_Reads Thank you very much for the update! I think (not positive here) that I have three left as far as Kepler goes, and re Läckberg, I believe I have one (maybe two) left to read in the Fjällbacka series. Is that what you guys are reading? 5y
Tove_Reads @gradcat Yes, Joona Linna and Fjällbacka. 5y
gradcat @Tove_Reads Okay, just checked: I have one more Fjällbacka & I haven‘t read any Joona Linna. I think this means I‘ll get to join in with you guys sooner rather than later...YAY! I‘m so excited ?! 5y
Tove_Reads Joona Linna is the character in Kepler‘s series. @gradcat 5y
gradcat @Tove_Reads Yup, you‘re right, of course. I‘ve gotten all mixed up here. Joona Linna is the Kepler trilogy, right? Anyway, I‘ve read through The Sandman. Haven‘t read The Stalker & The Rabbit Hunter. Re Lackberg, I haven‘t read The Lost Boy or Buried Angels. Sorry! It‘s been a while since I read these and I‘ve forgotten things. But I think I‘ve got it right now. Again, sorry I‘m so confused! 😐 5y
gradcat @Tove_Reads Okay, well excuse me for calling it the Kepler trilogy, because obviously there are more featuring Joona Linna. But Lazarus is one that I did not know about until just now, so I was only aware of six. Thanks, and sorry that I‘m such an idiot. I‘m not always this ditsy...I promise. 5y
Tove_Reads @gradcat Just jump in whenever you feel like it! First book of each series in January, second in February etc. 5y
gradcat @Tove_Reads Will do! Thanks loads!! ♥️ 5y

1. Jussi Adler Olsen
2. Lars Kepler
3. Camilla Lackberg
Reserve Jo Nesbo
5y
See All 26 Comments
Andrew65 Another series is Michael Ridpath‘s Magnus Iceland series, set in Iceland. 5 books and 2 novellas. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Ok I'll add that one. We need 3 books a month so if the authors you pick don't have enough books to spread throughout the year then you can read other authors too. (edited) 5y
Andrew65 Anyone else got any thoughts on the 3 authors to read? @Tove_Reads @EadieB @gradcat @Crazeedi @AnneCecilie @MrBook 5y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 I could go for your list, but would change one of the Swedes for Nesbo so we would have authors from three different countries. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Doesn't matter to me but I do like the ones you picked.
1. Jussi Adler Olsen
2. Lars Kepler
3. Camilla Lackberg
Reserve Jo Nesbo
5y
EadieB @Tove_Reads I have another Nordic author on my shelf. Have you read her?
Mari Jungstedt - 9 (Anders Knutas) + 1 (with Ruben Eliassen) A Darker Sky
(edited) 5y
AnneCecilie All I know it that I really, really want to read the Nesbø books I haven‘t read already. Other than that, I would be up for most of these. 5y
Tove_Reads @EadieB No I haven‘t, but she‘s popular here. 5y
Crazeedi @EadieB @Andrew65 the authors you chose sound great. I am a newbie with all these authors so I'm game! 5y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi I‘ve read a couple of Camilla Lackberg books but not yet tried others. Wanted to read Jussi Adler Olsen for a long time. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 I've been wanting to read Adler-Olsen too for a while. @Tove_Reads
Found a few more Swedish Noir on my shelves:
Asa Larsson - 5 (Rebecka Martinsson)
John Ajvide Lindqvist - 6 (Horror Novels)
Helene Tursten - 10 (Inspector Huss) 2 (Detective Inspector Embla Nystrom)
5y
Andrew65 @EadieB There‘s plenty of them! I think given this information we should make Adler-Olsen our first choice. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Sounds good to me! 5y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 so let me see if I can find Adler-Olsen, what book might we start with. I'll need to check my online libraries, local one , etc 5y
EadieB @Crazeedi We will start reading in January 2020 - the first book is 5y
Crazeedi @EadieB ok thank you! I'll see where I can find 5y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi @Eadieb This book won The Barry Award in 2012 so should be a good one. Just be aware it was also published under the title (edited) 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Need to get Ice Princess by Camilla Lackberg and The Hypnotist by Lars Kepler too for January.@Crazeedi (edited) 5y
Crazeedi @EadieB so we will read 3 a month or what? I will look for them. Thanks for info @Andrew65 5y
EadieB @Crazeedi Yes 3 different books a month. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB I really enjoyed Ice Princess. @Crazeedi (edited) 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 That's good to know! @Crazeedi 5y

Repost for @Tove_Reads :

Littens! 2020 will be #YearOfNordicNoir! @EadieB and @Andrew65 and myself will read several Nordic crime fiction series (probably will not finish all of them in 2020) next year. ☝🏾Some examples of what we‘ve been talking about. Would anyone else be interested in joining us?

Andrew65 Thanks for reposting. 🥰 All welcome to join us., in fact scratch that, all encouraged to join us. 😊👍 (edited) 5y

EadieB @Tove_Reads Nice display! Yes anyone who wants to read with us is always welcome! @Andrew65 @gradcat @Crazeedi @TrishB 5y
Andrew65 Also does anyone think there are some Nordic authors we‘ve missed off that are must Reads. 5y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 There are many, many, many! 5y
See All 42 Comments
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Hopefully we‘ll hear about them. 5y
Tove_Reads @andrew65 Läckberg, Edwardsson, Mankell, Holt, Tuomainen, Schulman, Lindstein, Fossum, Sjöwall, Nesser, Marklund and I could go on forever ? 5y
AnneCecilie I could be interested in joining in on the Nesbø books that I haven‘t read. Can‘t wait to to hear your thoughts on Marklund and Holt. 5y
TrishB @EadieB thanks for tag - I just can‘t get into this genre though 🤷‍♀️ 5y
EadieB @TrishB You're welcome! No problem! 5y
Crazeedi I have not read any so I'd be up to try, to see if I liked 5y
MrBook Thank you for the tag, @Andrew65 ☺️🤗! 5y
Andrew65 @MrBook Hope you and @BookBabe are well. 🤗 5y
Andrew65 @TrishB I‘m waiting to see if I can. 5y
Andrew65 @AnneCecilie @Crazeedi Would be great to have you with us. 🤗 5y
gradcat @EadieB & @Andrew65 Okay, I mentioned this in another post, but please count me in!! And thanks for thinking of me! ♥️♥️ 5y
EadieB @gradcat You are one of us! We think nice things about you all the time! 5y
EadieB @Crazeedi We will be glad to have you join us! 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB I totally agree, I consider @gradcat and @Crazeedi one of us. 5y
gradcat @EadieB & @Andrew65 Yay! Because I love @Crazeedi ... you guys are fantastic buddies! 5y
Tove_Reads @AnneCecilie Have read all Holts and Marklunds, so I won‘t read them now. We haven‘t finalized what we‘ll read yet, just tossing around names 🙂 5y
Tove_Reads @Crazeedi @gradcat Yes, naturally you are welcome to join us reading these books, and maybe we‘ll even need to vote on what we‘ll read 🙂 5y
Tove_Reads @TrishB Which ones have you tried? 5y
Andrew65 @gradcat I love all of you including @crazed too. 😍 5y
Andrew65 We should possibly start to produce a list of names then we can all vote and decide which three we start with, it worked well when we did this at the end of 2018, and look at the great series we have read since - Mo Hayder‘s Jack Caffery Series, Jane Casey‘s Maeve Kerrigan Series and Adrian McKinty‘s Sean Duffy Series (before he became flavour of the month). Loved them all. @Tove_Reads @EadieB @Crazeedi @gradcat @MrBook @AnneCecilie 5y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 just give me a heads up please, these are mostly all new authors to me. Thanks for including me, I feel special!!😍 5y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi And mostly new authors to me too. That‘s why I want to produce a list of authors so I can see what authors I can get hold of prior to voting on the three series to start with. (edited) 5y
gradcat @Andrew65 @EadieB @Crazeedi @Tove_Reads I would be happy to read anything you guys come up with that I haven‘t read. I‘ve read all of Nesbo & Adler-Olsen and about half of Lackberg. Love Sjowall but they are very dated. I‘d be happy to vote, or take direction...either way is fine with me... 🤷🏽‍♀️! 5y
gradcat @EadieB @Andrew65 @Tove_Reads @Crazeedi Oh, and I forgot to mention that I‘ve read all of Henning Mankell also. ♥️ 5y
Andrew65 @gradcat Did you enjoy the Adler-Olsen. Books? 5y
Crazeedi @gradcat Is there anything you havent read? Lol😉 I'm a newbie at these authors 5y
EadieB @Crazeedi I see your birthday is November 10th. Give me a list of books or update your list of books you want and I will send you some books. I have 2 trade sites where I have over 800 credits and I can see if I can find the books you want and I can have them mailed to you. Email me your list of books and your address. Thanks! (edited) 5y
gradcat @Andrew65 I love the Dept. Q (Adler-Olsen) books...and so did my mother! But we both thought the first ones were better than the latter ones, with an exception or two in there. They‘re really very funny in parts and quite serious in others. It‘s the characters & their relationships—so great! I even watched the three that they made into movies on Netflix, but those were all seriousness & no amusement. Have you read any of them? 5y
gradcat @Crazeedi It‘s only because I purposely searched for books set in foreign countries so that I could learn about them. I doubt that I‘ve read any more books than any of you...just only more foreign ones, perhaps? How are you? 5y
Crazeedi @EadieB I will try to get done tomorrow! Thank you so much!❤ 5y
Crazeedi @gradcat I need to start doing that! I'm glad I'm going to read with this group, opening up my reading world! I'm at the lake! 5y
gradcat @Crazeedi Mine too! I love this reading group. I think we have similar tastes in books, plus everybody knows of some book or other that I‘ve never heard of, so it‘s perfect! How‘s the weather up there? I hope it‘s good for you guys. Once more with feeling: I‘m jealous!! Catch a fish for me! 🎣 😂 ♥️ 5y
Tove_Reads @gradcat I have read at least one book from almost every country on our planet. 5y
gradcat @Tove_Reads That is really great! I think the rarest setting for me is a series set in North Vietnam. It‘s really good, though. I‘m going to have to compare notes with you some day because I love, love, love reading books that are culturally immersive. 5y
Tove_Reads @gradcat I have the address for my blog on my profile page here. Some of the books are there 5y
gradcat @Tove_Reads Thanks very much! I‘m going to bookmark your blog right this minute! ♥️ 5y
