This Is Not A Border: Reportage & Reflection from the Palestine Festival of Literature | Ahdaf Soueif, Omar Robert Hamilton
7 posts | 2 read | 18 to read
The Palestine Festival of Literature was established in 2008. Bringing together writers from all corners of the globe, it aims to help Palestinians break the cultural siege imposed by the Israeli military occupation, to strengthen their artistic links with the rest of the world, and to reaffirm, in the words of Edward Said, 'the power of culture over the culture of power'. Celebrating the tenth anniversary of PalFest, This Is Not a Border is a collection of essays, poems and stories from some of the world's most distinguished artists, responding to their experiences at this unique festival. Both heartbreaking and hopeful, their gathered work is a testament to the power of literature to promote solidarity and courage in the most desperate of situations. Contributors: Susan Abulhawa, Suad Amiry, Victoria Brittain, Jehan Bseiso, Teju Cole, Molly Crabapple, Selma Dabbagh, Mahmoud Darwish, Najwan Darwish, Geoff Dyer, Yasmin El-Rifae, Adam Foulds, Ru Freeman, Omar Robert Hamilton, Suheir Hammad, Nathalie Handal, Mohammed Hanif, Jeremy Harding, Rachel Holmes, John Horner, Remi Kanazi, Brigid Keenan, Mercedes Kemp, Omar El-Khairy, Nancy Kricorian, Sabrina Mahfouz, Jamal Mahjoub, Henning Mankell, Claire Messud, China Miéville, Pankaj Mishra, Deborah Moggach, Muiz, Maath Musleh, Michael Palin, Ed PavliçAtef Abu Saif, Kamila Shamsie, Raja Shehadeh, Gillian Slovo, Ahdaf Soueif, Linda Spalding, Will Sutcliffe, Alice Walker With messages from China Achebe, Michael Ondaatje and J. M. Coetzee

#QuotsyFeb18 Day 6: This remains one of my most powerful reads not just this year, but of all times, and it painfully depicts what #Shelter could possibly mean to those who are disenfranchised, disempowered and stripped of everything that is of meaning, whatsoever. What, then, is left?

#QuotsyJan18 Day 9: The seemingly-never-ending tension between Palestine and Israel creates a kind of #static that is bound to exist for several lifetimes. For my #LitWorld2018GB Literary Voyage Around the World Reading Challenge.

#StartingAnewJanuary Day 9: This is the kind of novel that makes you want to say #WantLightItsTooDarkOutside. I had to breathe in between essays, my heart in my mouth continually. One of my most powerful reads, ever. Review up at GatheringBooks by next week for my #LitWorld2018GB - Literary Voyage Around the World Reading Challenge.

This collection of essays/poetry reads almost like a physical assault, relentless in its fury and utter helplessness. Best paired with hot lemon tea.

Attended a panel with contributors to this book on Monday night. Did not agree with everything being discussed but fascinating discussion. Finding books of essays for the read harder Modern Mrs darcy challenge this year has been one of my favourite parts of the challenge #junebookbugs #stripes
