The Case for Impeachment
The Case for Impeachment | Allan J. Lichtman
18 posts | 7 read | 33 to read
NATIONAL BESTSELLER Liberal catnip Joe Scarborough, Morning Joe "It is still striking to see the full argument unfold and realize that you dont have to be a zealot to imagine some version of it happeningLies. Abuse of power. Treason. Crimes against humanity. Martial law. Lichtman throws everything Trumps way.." Washington Post Professor Allan J. Lichtman, who has correctly forecasted thirty years of presidential outcomes, makes the case for impeaching the 45th president of the United States, Donald J. Trump In the fall of 2016, Distinguished Professor of History at American University Allan J. Lichtman made headlines when he predicted that Donald J. Trump would defeat the heavily favored Democrat, Hillary Clinton, to win the presidential election. Now, in clear, nonpartisan terms, Lichtman lays out the reasons Congress could remove Trump from the Oval Office: his ties to Russia before and after the election, the complicated financial conflicts of interest at home and abroad, and his abuse of executive authority. The Case for Impeachment also offers a fascinating look at presidential impeachments throughout American history, including the often-overlooked story of Andrew Johnsons impeachment, details about Richard Nixons resignation, and Bill Clintons hearings. Lichtman shows how Trump exhibits many of the flaws (and more) that have doomed past presidents. As the Nixon Administration dismissed the reporting of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein as character assassination and a vicious abuse of the journalistic process, Trump has attacked the dishonest media, claiming, the press should be ashamed of themselves. Historians, legal scholars, and politicians alike agree: we are in politically uncharted watersthe durability of our institutions is being undermined and the publics confidence in them is eroding, threatening American democracy itself. Most citizenspolitics asidewant to know where the country is headed. Lichtman argues, with clarity and power, that for Donald Trumps presidency, smoke has become fire.

Thank you to the 10 GOP Reps who voted to impeach.

A week from now, he won‘t be President. Maybe we can start to begin again.

sprainedbrain So nice to see that 10 were brave enough to vote on the right side of history. 3y

Everything about Trump' s administration pisses me off anymore. This book brings up a lot of good points On why he can and should be impeached. On the one hand I hope he does get impeached, on the other I think Pence would be worse. As much as I hate it I think we are screwed for the next 3.5 years. #dolt45 #impeachtrump #resist

charissharpe From this side of the pond it kind of looks as though Pence is already pulling Trump's strings... He transgender decision re. the military surely came from him? 7y
AmyG This reeks of Pence and the religious right. Also deflects from Russia investigation. 7y

Lichtman, a history professor, puts together information available in the public domain to demonstrate the many ways in which Trump is likely to be headed toward impeachment. It's a compelling, chilling read which disgusts but doesn't surprise me. Well put together and informative regardless of your politics. (Personally, I think the Russian stuff will take him down. Time will tell.)

Sassy_Steph Let's hope they just get it done! He's clearly incompetent! He's already done so much damage in such a little amount of time! He needs to be stopped before he does more evil!! 7y

Some light dinner reading. Chapter 1 covers the impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson (Lincoln's VP), and how --after a 3-month trial-- the Senate failed by one vote to convict. Many historians think the reason for the failed impeachment was that many Senators did not like the lawful successor (at the time, not the VP but the President Pro Tem of the Senate).

GlassAsDiamonds Not really "justice" is it? ? 7y

All of my libraries have it out. Should I spend my audible credit or be patient?

** Library has it in hard back! All the digital copies are out. So I only have to wait until tomorrow **

riversong153 Patience! Lol, your wait time doesn't seem to be too long. I'm sure there's another good audiobook on your TBR! 7y

Mehso-so

As an outsider I was curious about the history, mechanics & politics of impeachment. This book offers a little of that, but mainly it is a catalog of Trump's misdeeds & the type of thing that might serve as a pretext to impeach him.

It reads like a digest of the past year's Trump-critical news items. But Trump just doing something impeachable doesn't mean impeachment is inevitable. I wanted more insight about the broader political climate.

Finished this on the plane home tonight. Could tell publication was rushed - could have used a little more editing, but author was definitely preaching to the choir with me - I would like to give it to someone with opposite views from me and see if it could finally change their outlook.
