With the intensity and rawness of Girl, Interrupted and Luckiest Girl Alive comes this razor-sharp debut, which reveals how one woman can go so far off the deep end, she might never make it back up Sam James has spent years carefully crafting her reputation as the best psychologist at Typhlos, Manhattan's most challenging psychiatric institution. She boasts the highest success rates with the most disturbed patients, believing if she can't save herself, she'll save someone else. It's this savior complex that serves her well in helping patients battle their inner demons, though it leads Sam down some dark paths and opens her eyes to her own mental turmoil. When Richard, a mysterious patient no other therapist wants to treat, is admitted to Typhlos, Sam is determined to unlock his secrets and his psyche. What she can't figure out is why does Richard appear to be so completely normal in a hospital filled with madness? And what, really, is he doing at the institution? As Sam gets pulled into Richard's twisted past, she can't help but analyze her own life, and what she discovers terrifies her. And so the mind games begin. But who is the savior and who is the saved? In this unexpected and addictive psychological debut, A.F. Brady takes readers into the psyche of a deeply disturbed woman desperately trying to keep her head above water, showing that sometimes what's most terrifying is what exists in your mind.

I liked the premise of this book. The mental health aspect was really interesting and it was a pretty quick read. I just felt like it was really scattered and the characters were all so unlikable. It made it hard to stay interested in this one when you really didn‘t want to root for anyone in the book. I liked the twist in it, but I did feel like it took too long to get to that point.

When I first heard about this book last year I planned to read it, but I kept putting off checking it out of the library. I finally got it and started reading it the other night. I don't know right now where the story will go. 🤷‍♀️

Got this as a Blind Date With A Book from the library. I enjoyed it. Sam is a pyscholigist working at an institution. She is known for handling the hard cases. Richard is a hard case. After the others are unable to get a hold on him, Sam is given is file. Sam has problems of her own. In the end, they both help each other.

Debut author!! I knew it, my first 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 of 2018! I loved, loved, loved this book. I‘m sure it has something to do with the fact that‘s the author‘s a psychotherapist and counselor, and my background is mental health, but even still! 400+ pages and not once did I think ‘is something going to happen?!‘ She keeps you involved on every single page. A lot of people can relate to the main character, and how she feels, acts and reacts. 👍🏻❤️

JoeStalksBeck I loved this book. The audiobook is fantastic too! The lead female is hysterical on the audiobook 6y
guinsgirlreads @JoeStalksBeck really?! I‘m not an audiobook person at all, but I may have to try it! Good book!!! 👍🏻 6y

Well, #TisTheSeason to read more uplifting books than this one- honestly, I wish I had bailed- I had been expecting more of a thriller, and less of a booze and pain filled read, despite the subject matter and setting in a NY mental institution. Had a hard time with these characters and the ultimate “twist” was less surprising than I had hoped... #ReindeerReads @Jess7

Blueberry I have that same Advent calendar. I wonder if your's is as old as mine. :) 6y
TorieStorieS @Blueberry Mine is actually my grandmother‘s! My mom has one too- I think they bought them together at a craft show in the Chicagoland area! I love it! 6y

Holy unreliable narrator, Batman! A clinical psychologist at a New York mental institution battles her own demons as she treats her patients, one of whom is accompanied by a next-to-nothing paper trail and a penchant for being tight lipped about why he is there. Her personal life is a nightmare and she is losing her own grip on reality in this debut novel which kept me guessing until the last five pages. 4.5 stars.

I don‘t read a lot of psychological thrillers but I liked this one! Very interesting concept, and a few twists I didn‘t see coming.
