Queen of America
Queen of America: A Novel | Luis Alberto Urrea
6 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
At turns heartbreaking, uplifting, fiercely romantic, and riotously funny, QUEEN OF AMERICA tells the unforgettable story of a young woman coming of age and finding her place in a new world. Beginning where Luis Alberto Urrea's bestselling The Hummingbird's Daughter left off, QUEEN OF AMERICA finds young Teresita Urrea, beloved healer and "Saint of Cabora," with her father in 1892 Arizona. But, besieged by pilgrims in desperate need of her healing powers, and pursued by assassins, she has no choice but to flee the borderlands and embark on an extraordinary journey into the heart of turn-of-the-century America. Teresita's passage will take her to New York, San Francisco, and St. Louis, where she will encounter European royalty, Cuban poets, beauty queens, anxious immigrants and grand tycoons-and, among them, a man who will force Teresita to finally ask herself the ultimate question: is a saint allowed to fall in love?

3.5❤️
I didn't realize this was a follow up to Hummingbird! Same characters completely different tone. I adore Urrea, and I listen to most of this on audio because he reads it, and I love his voice. I have to say though that I struggled paying attention to most of it. I live that is is more about the daily immigration life then the magic of the 1st book, and there is a lot of humor, maybe I just wasn't in the right mood.

Two riders came from the darksome sea, black against the morning light, and they tore into the first Mexican village.

ravenlee Have you read Patricia Briggs‘ Mercy Thompson series? There‘s a great reference to that movie in one of the books, not sure which, being a favorite for bad movie night. 6y

The House of Broken Angels is my most anticipated read this year, so I was excited to learn that Luis Alberto Urrea was in town to give a talk. He is absolutely wonderful in person. If you haven‘t read any of his books, both his non-fiction and fiction are excellent. I highly recommend The Hummingbird‘s Daughter.

Spiderfelt I read five books by Urrea two summers ago. He's fantastic. 7y
DreesReads @Spiderfelt yay! I feel like I have heard of him, but could not place a title. 7y
Spiderfelt Queen of America is the sequel to Hummingbird's Daughter. I recommend reading the first. Together they are an epic story. He's probably best known for this work of non-fiction: 7y
