Just Like Family
Just Like Family: A Novel | Kate Hilton
7 posts | 7 read | 3 to read
From the nationally bestselling author of The Hole in the Middle, a witty, insightful new novel about juggling the demands of three husbands—a work husband, an almost husband and an ex-husband—and figuring out the true meaning of family. Avery Graham has built a life that anyone would admire. She has a brilliant career as chief of staff to Peter Haines, the charismatic mayor of Toronto. She has a devoted partner in Matt, her live-in boyfriend of 14 years. And she has a loving family and deep friendships that stretch back to childhood summers at the cottage. But when Matt proposes, Avery’s past threatens to engulf her present. Can she contemplate a lifetime commitment to Matt after her disastrous first marriage to Hugh? And is Matt really the love of her life, when she has spent so much of it by Peter’s side? Avery could use some good advice from the women who know her best, but her closest friends, Jenny and Tara, have drifted away over the years. When a scandal erupts at city hall, Avery must overcome her deepest fears about love and loss, and discover what it means to be a family.

Good story, set in Ontario and New York. It was interesting for me as the protagonist works for a municipal government, which is what I do also. Some of the dilemmas felt freakishly familiar and others—thank goodness!—didn‘t. If you read the book you‘ll know what I‘m talking about 😊😂 I think the author did a good job in weaving the backstory into present day so we understand character motivation.

Rarely do I bail on a book, but this one was going absolutely nowhere. Guess I'll need a different book starting with J for #litsyatoz Got any suggestions?

Kristy_K Haven‘t read it, but it‘s gotten good reviews and is my book for this letter: 6y

Mehso-so

My first ARC, through #HCCFirstLook. I really enjoyed Hilton's writing style, and will definitely seek out other books of hers. However, this one only gets a so-so because I really disliked the main character. I felt no character growth from her, everything just sort of happened to her in the end. But if Hilton ever decided to write about the adults at Berry Point I'll read it in a heartbeat!

How cute is this?! I was selected by Harper Collins Canada to be one of their #HCCFirstLook readers for Just Like Family by Kaye Hilton.

Looks like a fun read, perfect to kick off summer! Will post further once I dive in!

(As you can tell, I'm pretty excited - this is my first ARC!)
