Jumpstart the World
Jumpstart the World | Catherine Ryan Hyde

Elle is a loner. She doesn’t need people. Which is a good thing, because she’s on her own: she had to move into her own apartment so her mother’s boyfriend won’t have to deal with her. Then she meets Frank, the guy who lives next door. He’s older and has a girlfriend, but Elle can’t stop thinking about him. Frank isn’t like anyone Elle has ever met. He listens to her. He’s gentle. And Elle is falling for him, hard. But Frank is different in a way that Elle was never prepared for: he’s transgender. And when Elle learns the truth, her world is turned upside down. Now she’ll have to search inside herself to find not only the true meaning of friendship but her own role in jumpstarting the world. Tender, honest, and compassionate, Jumpstart the World is a stunning story to make you laugh, cry, and honor the power of love. From the Hardcover edition.

I decided to give this book a shot since I'm running out of trans narratives at my library. Nearly finished it on the plane but I find it unbearable now.

The plot is about a privileged girl discovering her new neighbor is trans and is somehow emotionally effected/shocked by this? It makes no sense and it's a concept that's used regularly to excuse abuse and violence against trans people. Ugh. So many horrible moments in this book though.

SkeletonKey Also, much appreciation to @Lindy for shedding light on the author who made these choices: https://www.lambdaliterary.org/features/01/19/leslie-feinberg-catherine-hyde/ 6y

Started this on the plane and nearly finished it. Another YA book with a transmasculine character. I'll let you know all about it when I'm done.

Lindy If you are interested in some backstory relating to this author and her books about trans characters, here‘s a relevant essay online: https://www.lambdaliterary.org/features/01/19/leslie-feinberg-catherine-hyde/ 6y
SkeletonKey @Lindy - Thank you! I admit I've been kind of angry about the descriptions and really don't like the main character so it's good to read more about where this author is coming from. Makes me kind of sick though. 6y
SkeletonKey @Lindy - I also get sad that there's so little available to read BY trans people and yet things like this get published. Whyyyyy. 6y
Lindy @SkeletonKey I feel your anguish. I‘m glad that Litsy and other social media makes it easier to track down ownvoices works. 6y
SkeletonKey @Lindy - Me too 💜 6y

Sweet YA book about friendship. I just loved Frank who was transgender. Basically teaches empathy for others and that people are souls, much more than sexualities or genders. A beautiful soul is a beautiful soul, no matter what package he/she comes in. The main character, Elle learns this well. Elle:"I'm trying to jumpstart the world." Harry: "what does that mean?" "I'm trying to remind the world to be what it knows it should be."
