Stranger, Baby
Stranger, Baby | Emily Berry
6 posts | 6 read | 8 to read
'The loss of a mother must be something very strange', observed Sigmund Freud, a reflection that haunts this intense and powerful new book. Emily Berry's Dear Boy was described as a 'blazing debut', winning the Forward Prize for Best First Collection in 2013.Stranger, Baby, its follow-up, is marked by the same sense of fantasy and play, estrangement and edgy humour for which she has become known. But these poems delve deeper again, in their off-kilter and often agonising encounter with childhood loss. Love, anger, tenderness, violence: all find expression in poems powered by grief's tidal undertow. This is a book of mourning, recrimination, exhilaration, and 'oceanic feeling', where familiarity meets strangeness and despair becomes a kind of celebration.

#BookReport

I finished both Grand Hotel Europa and Stranger, Baby

I continued my reading of The Story of Art with Men

I started Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Bookish.SAM I just recently came across Katy Hessel! I haven‘t read the book but I feel like I‘m already a fan 😊 I look forward to picking it up! 12mo
Cinfhen I read (audiobook) my first HP last month and I was pleasantly surprised. I kind of promised my SIL I‘d listen to a book a month until I get through the entire series but so far I haven‘t felt like listening to book two yet🤪 12mo
AnneCecilie @Cinfhen I love HP and I‘m rereading them as the illustrated editions are published. I first read them when they were first translated into Norwegian years ago. I love these books. 12mo
AnneCecilie @Bookish.SAM I love it. The book has highlighted how many women have been ignored/ forgotten. I will try to see my favorites from this book. 12mo

"What happened was, my mother was very very sad. She was so sad she could not hold up her head, she could not sit down, she could not lie down, she could not see out of the dark, my very sad mum."

batsy @Kalalalatja No, it's in my TBR. But I've read her poetry in the Penguin Modern Poets series and really loved it ❤️ 6y
batsy @Centique Something about the way she writes has hooked me too. I've been buying mostly fiction and have completely neglected poetry but this one is high on the list :) 6y
batsy @emilyhaldi The way it ends 💔 6y
