1920: The Year that Made the Decade Roar
1920: The Year that Made the Decade Roar | Eric Burns
10 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
One of the most dynamic eras in American historythe 1920sbegan with this watershed year that would set the tone for the century to follow. "The Roaring Twenties is the only decade in American history with a widely applied nickname, and our collective fascination with this era continues. But how did this surge of innovation and cultural milestones emerge out of the ashes of The Great War? No one has yet written a book about the decades beginning. Acclaimed author Eric Burns investigates the year of 1920, which was not only a crucial twelve-month period of its own, but one that foretold the future, foreshadowing the rest of the 20th century and the early years of the 21st, whether it was Sacco and Vanzetti or the stock market crash that brought this era to a close. Burns sets the record straight about this most misunderstood and iconic of periods. Despite being the first full year of armistice, 1920 was not, in fact, a peaceful timeit contained the greatest act of terrorism in American history to date. And while 1920 is thought of as starting a prosperous era, for most people, life had never been more unaffordable. Meanwhile, African Americans were putting their stamp on culture and though people today imagine the frivolous image of the flapper dancing the night away, the truth was that a new kind of power had been bestowed on women, and it had nothing to do with the dance floor. . . From prohibition to immigration, the birth of jazz, the rise of expatriate literature, and the original Ponzi scheme, 1920 was truly a year like no other.

78/150 An interesting look at one of the pivotal years in American history. While the author does stray from his subject at times, he does detailed work discussing the causes that led to monumental events of 1920, and also discusses the ramifications those events had on future generations. 3 ⭐⭐⭐ 1/2
3/15 for #Rushathon (I'm behind my pace) @DieAReader @GHABI4ROSES @Andrew65

This could have been such a good book but ... 😔
Burns would write almost a blurb about an event in 1920 and then 3 pages about things that happen later in the decade. I know that butterfly effect and all that, but if he wanted to write about the entire decade he should have. If he wanted to write about conspiracy theories he should have. Also don‘t f*%king quote your own books as research. For a historical book it sucked. ⭐️⭐️

OrangeMooseReads @JenlovesJT47 I don‘t have Kindle on my phone, I may have to put it on. I always forget about Serial Reader. I put that on my phone specifically for times I forget my book or the wait is longer than planned. 4y

1. The tagged book. It‘s a lot to digest at a time so I‘ve been moving through it slowly.
2. Crafting and eating ... eating is a hobby, right?
3. Not sure probably something light and easy. I‘m an emotional reader so whatever title strikes my fancy when I finish my current read.
