Castle in the Stars: The Space Race of 1869
Castle in the Stars: The Space Race of 1869 | Alex Alice
15 posts | 15 read | 14 to read
In search of the mysterious element known as aether, Claire Dulac flew her hot air balloon toward the edge of our stratosphere--and never returned. Her husband, genius engineer Archibald Dulac, is certain that she is forever lost. Her son, Seraphin, still holds out hope. One year after her disappearance, Seraphin and his father are delivered a tantalizing clue: a letter from an unknown sender who claims to have Claire's lost logbook. The letter summons them to a Bavarian castle, where an ambitious young king dreams of flying the skies in a ship powered by aether. But within the castle walls, danger lurks--there are those who would stop at nothing to conquer the stars. In this lavishly illustrated graphic novel, Alice Alex delivers a historical fantasy adventure set in a world where man journeyed into space in 1869, not 1969.

4.5 ⭐️ I love this story. The mix of steampunk and space gets me every time. It is helpful if you have read book number one, but it‘s not required. An airship is trying to escape to the top of the aether, and then once there, discover the craziness of space. I love this series.

I was going to read The Time Machine for #Booked2018 #steampunk, but my eye-stalks caught sight of this and I felt a mighty need. Neat little middle grade graphic novel set in 1869 about a kid whose mother lost her life in search of a fuel called aether and his subsequent fascination and search for it. There are some parallels to space travel and some historical fantasy adventure and it's just A+.

Getting anything done at school the week before Christmas break is impossible... so I‘m giving up and starting this instead.

Year's not out yet, this is what Goodreads says about my year in books, not being able to make up its mind about which was the shortest book.

Sarah83 Sooo many 😓😓 6y
julesG @Sarah83 Don't worry. I'm only in a competition with myself. 6y
Sarah83 How many do you want to read until the end of the year? 6y

julesG @Sarah83 Oh, well. I started my Goodreads challenge with 20 books. Then upped it to 100. I would just love to finish three more books before the year is out. 6y
Sarah83 Sounds like a great plan. I want to finish 100 books this year. 😉 6y

How gorgeous is this art? The whole story is beautiful. It feels more than an animated fairytale than anything else; something I hadn't realized I've been craving in my reading life. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Let's build a ship to study Aether, that mysterious gas in the sky that could save the world. To accurately describe this story it is time to get out the mixing bowl. The first thing we have to do is throw in some Hugo Cabret, add some Golden Compass (any version), melt a box of crayons, and a big handful of cogs and sprockets. This futuristic historical ship building is part adventure, part science, part thriller, and all fun.
