Adventures in Human Being
Adventures in Human Being | Gavin Francis
10 posts | 14 read | 28 to read
Sunday Times bestseller We have a lifetime's association with our bodies, but for many of us they remain uncharted territory. In Adventures in Human Being, Gavin Francis leads the reader on a journey through health and illness, offering insights on everything from the ribbed surface of the brain to the secret workings of the heart and the womb; from the pulse of life at the wrist to the unique engineering of the foot. Drawing on his own experiences as a doctor and GP, he blends first-hand case studies with reflections on the way the body has been imagined and portrayed over the millennia. If the body is a foreign country, then to practise medicine is to explore new territory: Francis leads the reader on an adventure through what it means to be human. Both a user's guide to the body and a celebration of its elegance, this book will transform the way you think about being alive, whether in sickness or in health. Published in association with the Wellcome Collection.

I adore Gavin Francis's work. I love medical history, of which there is much in his books, but it's his profound sensitivity, his deep thought on cultural and social resonance and his ability to write beautifully and to find beauty in medical practice and the human body that makes this such a moving, enlightening read. Please, Dr Francis, keep writing forever. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is a book about the human body that‘s as much about being human as it is about the body itself. Gavin Francis, who is a doctor, skillfully blends philosophy, science, and patient stories. Highly recommend for science nerds and anyone with a body!

Another audiobook that‘s been in my Audible library for about a year. It‘s pretty interesting if you like A & P. That‘d be anatomy and physiology. 😁

Essays by a doctor (who sounds like a really interesting guy), it includes all kinds of interesting info about the body that I never knew.

This was an interesting read with lots of "did you know" moments to bring up at dinner parties! A little too much history, I would've preferred more personal anecdotes from the author's experience, but still a great read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Love books with a medical slant. A fascinating journey from head to toe that combines the most up to date science with ancient history, tradition and philosophy. I learnt so much and laughed lots too. Great job Mr Francis. More please 😀

'Medical-y' books written in an accessible way ring my bells. It's one of those things. Loving this so far. And there's been a mention of a cat so Amber approves too (although perhaps she wouldn't if she had read that particular extract 😳).

ReadingOver50 Sounds interesting 8y
lucy_literati About 1/4 of the way through and it really is. History + interesting facts about the human body ❤️ 8y
