Tintin and the King Ottokars Sceptre
Tintin and the King Ottokars Sceptre | Herge
4 posts | 10 read | 2 to read
Political unrest in Europe in the late 1930s influenced Herge when he wrote King Ottokar's Sceptre, in which Tintin and absent-minded Professor Alembick travel to Syldavia to try to avert a confrontation with neighboring Borduria. The history Herge creates for his fictional Eastern European country is complex and fascinating, and a locked-room mystery and cross-country pursuit make for one of Tintin's more entertaining adventures. Syldavia and Borduria would return in later stories, as would one of Herge's most memorable characters, Bianca Castafiore, the "Milanese Nightingale" renowned for her rendition of the "Jewel Song" from Faust.

Hergé got back on form with this one. You could read this book twice: Once to read the story and again to just admire how every single panel is superbly created. Hergé‘s art is never still. From the smallest of gestures to people walking, running, falling or jumping, the characters seem alive. I think the stories go from strength to strength now, with two of my favourites coming up in a row.

Was at a bit of a loss for books where a plane crash occurs ... even a metaphorical or symbolic plane crash, if that makes sense (probably not) 🤔 Thankfully, Tintin to the rescue!
