Grendel's Guide to Love and War
Grendel's Guide to Love and War | A. E. Kaplan
12 posts | 9 read | 16 to read
The Perks of Being a Wallflower meets Revenge of the Nerds in this tale of a teen misfit who seeks to take down the bro next door, but ends up falling for his enemy’s sister and uncovering difficult truths about his family in the process. Tom Grendel lives a quiet life—writing in his notebooks, mowing lawns for his elderly neighbors, and pining for Willow, a girl next door who rejects the “manic-pixie-dream” label. But when Willow’s brother, Rex (the bro-iest bro ever to don a jockstrap), starts throwing wild parties, the idyllic senior citizens’ community where they live is transformed into a war zone. Tom is rightfully pissed—his dad is an Iraq vet, and the noise from the parties triggers his PTSD—so he comes up with a plan to end the parties for good. But of course, it’s not that simple. One retaliation leads to another, and things quickly escalate out of control, driving Tom and Willow apart, even as the parties continue unabated. Add to that an angsty existential crisis born of selectively reading his sister’s Philosophy 101 coursework, a botched break-in at an artisanal pig farm, and ten years of unresolved baggage stemming from his mother’s death . . . and the question isn’t so much whether Tom Grendel will win the day and get the girl, but whether he’ll survive intact.

This book just made me laugh out loud but given this quote I think I have a dark sense of humor. #quote #ya #yalit #contemporaryfiction #humor

I feel like everything I have ever heard about the VA hospital has always been to say that it takes forever to get care. This doesn't jive with that thought. I'm not military so I don't know personally. But I just feel like this isn't done right. Am I justified in thinking this? Or am I alone here?

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks No you're right... I have a friend and her dad goes to the VA and has to wait forever and does not get the treatment/care he deserves. Yet we have all of these people in the world taking advantage of welfare getting free rides. 😡 7y
Letmetakeashelfie @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks it's a difficult system to iron out, I can't pretend that I know much about that situation, at least not enough to pass judgements, but I can definitely say that it doesn't feel like the author is talking from a place of experience here. But that could also be the fault of this being an arc. I'm not sure. 7y

I'm not sure how I feel about this book. They just called Macklemore really old bad white people rap.... I feel like there are really two white rap artists that earned respect from me. Eminem and Macklemore. It's a silly thing to be bugged by... but it kinda felt like the author is just grasping for a song they heard of without really knowing what they are talking about. Also really old??? Ack.

I'm reposting this for #naughtyneighbors - in this book they threw nightly teen beer parties with loud terrible music that lasted past 3 AM in a retirement community. #splashintosummerreads #ya

This was an adorable contemporary #YA riff on Beowulf. Tom Grendel lives in a peaceful retirement community until the Rothgars move next door, turning his life upside down. What follows is a series of escalating pranks, a little bit of romance, and an exploration of what it means to really know someone. It was a fun, fast paced read with heart.

Death is like that, I suppose. One moment you're feeling the breeze under your clothes, and the next it's all over.

I absolutely loved this YA reworking of Beowulf. This is exactly what YA should be. Fun and crazy adventures, angst, first love and quite possibly my favorite best friend to ever grace a YA book, Ed. This book comes out in April and I encourage everyone who loves YA to pick this up. It's so much fun.

As I don't have a dog in this Super Bowl (I'm a Steelers fan) guess it's time to start a new ARC!

RanaElizabeth As a proud Black and Yellow fan, you definitely have a dog in this fight...anybody but the Patriots! 😎 7y
