Rewrite Your Life
Rewrite Your Life: Discover Your Truth Through the Healing Power of Fiction | Jessica Lourey
12 posts | 1 read | 1 reading | 2 to read
According to common wisdom, we all have a book inside of us. Every author calls on, crystallizes, and shades his or her life experiences to craft fiction, whether they're writing world-bending sci fi or a thinly veiled autobiography. It is precisely those most conflict-ridden moments of our lives#8212the tragedies, humiliations, and terrors#8212that shape the best stories. But how do we select and then write our most significant story#8212the one that helps us to evolve and invites pure creativity into our lives; the one that people line up to read? In Rewrite Your Life, creative writing professor, sociologist, and popular fiction author Jess Lourey guides you through the redemptive process of writing a healing novel that recycles and transforms your most precious resources#8212your own emotions and experiences. This fact-to-fiction process provides not only the essential building blocks of best-selling novels, but is also personally transformative. Based on the process the author developed and field-tested in the wake of her husband's suicide, Rewrite Your Life is devoted to the practice of discovering, healing, and evolving through fiction writing. It combines research, practical and engaging guidance, and personal experience to meet readers where they are and take their creativity and personal growth to the next level. Tender, raw, and laugh-out-loud funny, Rewrite Your Life offers both a map and a compass for those seeking to harvest their life experiences to heal, lead a more authentic life, and craft a rich, powerful work of fiction.

Day 2 of #24B4Monday ends at only at 6 hours of reading, but I did finish Rewrite Your Life and start The Art of Communicating, so I feel pretty good. With luck I‘ll finish another book tomorrow, and that will also be good.

Andrew65 Going well, and well on track for double figures 👏👏👏 5y

Pickpick

4 out of 5 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I loved the vast majority of this book — it‘s a lean, enjoyable read with lots of personality and intelligent advice. The author is always genuine, sometimes hilarious, and reassuringly eloquent. What keeps it from being five stars for me is that I found the given view of writer‘s block unhelpfully narrow, and one of the author‘s recommended books is among the few I really loathe, for pretty much the same reason. 😉

“The scale of what you are attempting will crush you if you don't keep the goals consistent and attainable, and you'll be demoralized if you don't reward yourself. But some days, even that won't be enough. On those days, you will want beer, courage, and a kitten to get you through.”

Guess I could use some beer, courage, and a kitten today. 😆

Dragonfairykats Can always use a kitten. 5y
Sunraven @Dragonfairykats: If we say that adult cats count as kittens, I have two. Now for the beer and courage! 😁 Though actually I‘d rather have a butterbeer with that courage... 5y

Not to degrade anyone else‘s reading time so far, at all — I‘ve just read for a big fat 40 minutes so far today and am feeling unfocused. 🤨

I‘ve read the beginnings of two novels and put them down, and through willpower reached 77% in Rewrite Your Life, but I keep wandering off and thinking of ways to be “productive.” (Does it count as pages read if you re-read your own unpublished work in order to edit it? 🤔)

Oh, well ... Onward!

#24B4Monday

Dragonfairykats Sometimes you just need to not get frustrated, and let your brain unwind (which it sounds like to me it wants, but just my thoughts) 5y
Sunraven @Dragonfairykats: Probably compounding the issue is that my mind hasn‘t been unwound in years. 😉 I‘m also at an awkward stage where I‘m untangling a bunch of life-threads, and even putting them down takes a fair bit of effort, until they‘re disentangled enough. Part of me wants to just work at it and work at it until I reach a satisfying stopping point because I‘m tired of the mess and the tension. Guess that interferes with reading brain... 5y
Sunraven @Dragonfairykats: Though you‘re probably right, since someone else just told me it‘s okay to want to chill sometimes, and I read a blog post earlier on not overworking yourself. The universe is trying very politely to tell me to take a mini vacation. 😆 5y

Made it to almost four hours of reading today. Read 49 pages on The Hidden Life of Trees (in print), and from 0-64% on Rewrite Your Life (on #scribd). I was hoping to get at least one book finished today, but I can‘t keep my eyes open any longer. Sleepy time for now.

P.S. I‘m so tired I typed “54” instead of “24” and had to redo the graphic. Pretty sure @jb72 caught the incorrect post. 😆

jb72 LOL 😂 5y
IndoorDame I love this graphic! I'm going to try and make one. 5y
Andrew65 A great first day total. Well done. 👏 5y

44% done on this book and it‘s at “must own in print” status. My copy has now been ordered; may it arrive swiftly and safely!

Made it to 38% before my eyes decided they‘re tired and need a break. Maybe I‘ll switch to audiobook or print soon, hmm.

Really enjoying this book so far. The author is vivacious and her writing is very colorful. Might have to check out some of her fiction...

And thanks to @Victoriahoperose for giving me the idea to screenshot the timer and pair it with a book picture! 😁

Started Rewrite Your Life on #Scribd before bed last night and got in about half an hour for #24B4Monday. The cats have woken me up early this morning, so I guess I‘ll get some more reading in while I‘m at it. Oh, and some coffee, too.

WIll maybe post a tentative stack later, once I get a few words and some nutrients under my belt. 🌞

Also, tagging @Meaw_catlady re: cat pic! (He‘s blurry, but technically...)

jb72 Aw cute cat! Mallie is my little attention getter. Good luck! 5y
Sunraven @jb72: Thanks twice — once for the luck and once on Pepper‘s behalf! His partner in crime, not pictured although he was the actual wakefulness instigator today, is Pearl (Black Pearl, who despite his girly sounding name is a guy cat 😆). 5y
Meaw_catlady I really love this pic!! It‘s perfect thank you for the tag! 💕😻 5y
