Her Smoke Rose Up Forever
Her Smoke Rose Up Forever | James Tiptree
Her Smoke Rose Up Forever collects eighteen brilliant short stories from a luminary of the science-fiction genre, James Tiptree, Jr. This updated edition is the quintessential Tiptree collection and contains revisions from the authors original notes. Tiptrees fiction reflects the darkly complex world its author inhabited: exploring the alien among us; the unreliability of perception; love, sex, and death; and humanitys place in a vast, cold universe.

"The condition of weightlessness didn‘t bother her at all. She was one of those rare ones who found sustained pleasure in the odd life of free-fall. The exasperations of toolboxes squirmily unpacking themselves when opened merely amused her."

"The bright blurs and stubs shrank and brightened—until, with a perceptible jolt, there they were! Stars of all colors and brilliances, clouds dark and light, galaxies—tier beyond tier, a universe of glory."

On today‘s episode of The Bookstore we talk about our worst fears. We read two stories inspired by our phobias and discuss them. You can read the stories online (links in our blog post www.thebookstorepodcast.com) and check out the episode where ever you get your podcasts!

What‘s your worst fear? Got any good story recommendations for it?

BeansPage One of my fears is the fear of heights. It makes me dizzy and I get vertigo and start feeling sick. So I decided to face my fears and get over it by skydiving ✈️ 18,500 feet!!! 6y
TheBookstorePodcast @TheReadingMermaid That‘s pretty darn brave! 6y
BeansPage Yeah and then my husband proposed to me on the ground when I touched down 💍😋 6y

For Tuesday‘s episode we‘re reading short stories that are related to our worst fears. For Corinne‘s, we read THE SCREWFLY SOLUTION by James Tiptree, Jr (aka Raccoona Sheldon/Alice B. Sheldon). It was published in Tiptree‘s anthology, Her Smoke Rose Up Forever, but you can also read it online for free. And you should! It‘s scary and real feeling and incredible.
Check it out, let us know what you think, and listen to the episode on Tuesday!

Everything I love! Sci-fi, short stories, speculative dystopian feminist fiction!

We have, like, a LOT of bookshelves in our house, but this tends to have the newest acquisitions for some reason. Plus, my parent's old vinyl! And some of my own, too. Really need to set up the turntable. #shelfie #riotgrams

Weaponxgirl I want to dive into the vinyl as well as the books 7y

Very interesting stories, very disturbing...
A lot of violence against women which is quite shocking.

Read the first 8 stories now and I'm really flashed... The stories are great, some of them, like "The Screwfly Solution" or "Your Faces, o my Sisters" are really disturbing and make me think about the world we live in...

Happy birthday to Alice Sheldon, who wrote under the name James Tiptree, Jr. I cannot recommend her story "The Screwfly Solution" enough - it had such an impact on me as a piece of feminist SF. But as important as that story is to me, it's the only one I've read - so I went on a library hunt and wound up grabbing some past winners of the Tiptree Award, too. Excited to dive in! #bookishbirthdays #www

#recommendsday - these short stories are memorable, heartbreaking, thought provoking, one of the best voices in science fiction (and secretly a woman)

NovelGirl82 Short stories are my favorite!! I'm definitely going to have to check this out! 8y
