The Crooked Maid
The Crooked Maid: A Novel | Dan Vyleta
3 posts | 2 read | 3 to read
Vienna, 1948. The war is over, and as the initial phase of denazification winds down, the citizens of Vienna struggle to rebuild their lives amidst the rubble. Anna Beer returns to the city she fled nine years earlier upon discovering her husband's infidelity. She has come back to find him and, perhaps, to forgive him. Traveling on the same train from Switzerland is eighteen-year-old Robert Seidel, a schoolboy summoned home to his stepfather's sickbed and the secrets of his family's past. As Anna and Robert navigate a damaged, unrecognizable city, they cross paths with a war-widowed American journalist, a hunchbacked young girl, and a former POW whose primary purpose is to survive, by any means. Meanwhile, in the shells of burned-out houses and beneath the bombed-out ruins, a ghost of a man, his head wrapped in a red scarf, battles demons from his past and hides from a future deeply uncertain for all. In The Crooked Maid, Dan Vyleta returns to the shadows of a war-darkened Vienna, in a thrilling and atmospheric story of blame, guilt, and restitution.

Took a readathon break to get our flu shots. Such an exciting Saturday night. lol Having a little gin and going back to my book. The gin was necessary after my drive. The roads were very snow covered and slippery.

Jess861 Nope - you are not saying the roads are snow covered and slippery 😞 - so not ready yet! My winter tire appointment isn't until the middle of November! 4y
JacqMac @Jess861 Unfortunately, yes. It has been snowing here all week. We have about 15-20cm on the ground. 4y
Jess861 @JacqMac Oh no - I'm sure that means we aren't far behind 😥 4y

Andrew65 Great time 👏👏👏 I had my flu jab last week. 4y
MsMelissa I tried to get our flu shots last week but only limited quantities have been available so far and we missed out. I‘m hoping my dr‘s office gets them in the next few weeks 🤞🏻 4y
JacqMac @Book_Fiend_Melissa We got ours at shoppers. They have all the availability online, so you can check before you go. It‘s very handy. I heard that Alberta ordered extra this year, because they were expecting many more people to get them. I hope you are able to find some. 4y
Andrew65 @Book_Fiend_Melissa As a school we‘ve paid for flu jabs for anyone who wants them for the past few years and do it through a private company. @JacqMac 4y
MsMelissa Ya, we tried Shoppers, but they don‘t take appointments and they were out within a few days of receiving their doses. My dr had received any yet, but apparently the bulk of doses will be available starting next week/early November. @Andrew65 That‘s a smart thing to do! We don‘t pay for our flu shots - the gov‘t does - but it can be frustrating trying to find a place that actually has the vaccine! 4y
Andrew65 @Book_Fiend_Melissa We have a yearly contract, in the UK only vulnerable or elderly get free vaccinations. (edited) 4y
JacqMac @Book_Fiend_Melissa That‘s such a long time to wait. I hope none of you get sick while you wait. 4y
JacqMac @Andrew65 Wow. That is interesting. I never knew that. 4y
