Sixteen-year-old Tatum Elsea is settling in for the worst summer on record. After she's unfairly implicated in one of her best friend's ideas gone awry, Tatum's stepmother places her under virtual house arrest. But to Tatum's surprise, her summer doesn't turn out to be all bad. And things really begin to look up when she starts her own graphic design business and meets a cello-playing client, Seamus. If Tatum is reading his emails right, Seamus is funny, smart, and talented--and he seems to think the same about her. Too bad he's spending his summer across the ocean in Ireland...not that Tatum would be allowed to go on a date anyway. But over the course of the summer, Tatum will learn that sometimes going after what you want means breaking the rules. In the process, she'll discover things about her friends, her family, and herself that she never could have guessed. And when Seamus turns out to be closer than she thought, she might just get a perfect kiss in the bargain. A modern play on the Cinderella story arc, Christina June's It Started with Good-bye will appeal to fans of Sarah Dessen, Stephanie Perkins, and Jennifer E. Smith.

This Cinderella retelling is so subtle, sweet & true to its characters. It's not the kind of story in which you have a clear victim & bully. Throughout the book, we see how families can come from wildly different perspectives but still be on the same side. And yes, of course it's nice to see Tatum escape her house & find romance, but even nicer to see how June has packed so much sweetness & self-reflection into such a cute & quick-paced read.

Cute but simple.

Recommend for those who like contemporary fairy tale retelling, enjoy the arts, and identify with making mistakes to find yourself.

I love Cinderella retellings. This book was an enjoyable quick read. I loved that the book didn't just focus on the romance (in fact I would look at that as a side story), but also the family relationships and friendships.

My slightly ambitious TBR for the day, but I just have 5 chapters of The Darkest Part of the Forest and I'm halfway done with It Started With Goodbye, so I hope to start Gentleman's Guide after that!!

This was a very readable book, and I think this would be a perfect read for a 15/16 year old. I was just not loving the book. #netgalley #arc

This was modern day retelling of the Cinderella story told from 16 year old Tatum's perspective.

This definitely is a YA book I would recommend to my daughters as the story was well told and they would be able to relate it much more than I did. With that said, I will admit I enjoy this quick read.
