Well, that was.......something.😧
My next #tbrjarpick is...True West by Sam Shepard. Here‘s the synopsis that says what this book is about:”Kit Harington (Game of Thrones) and Johnny Flynn (Beast) smolder and burn as sparring brothers in Sam Shepard‘s darkly comic 1980 drama. The Cain and Abel conflict is a showdown of sibling rivalry, to be sure, but also bears witness to a legacy of booze-fueled family brawls.” I‘m looking forward to listening to this audiobook.
This was one of the Audible freebies last month. If you enjoy Sam Shepard, as I do, you will probably enjoy this production. I tend to enjoy the way Shepard wrote petty familial tension with a bitingly humorous bent that sometimes bordered on the absurd. If you‘ve not enjoyed other Sam Shepard plays, this will probably not do anything for you.
I don‘t even know where to begin. I feel like this really had potential, but it fell flat... wayyy flat. I kept hoping there would be more to it. I spent most of the time listening thinking, is this really what I‘m listening to right now? I did find the relationship between the brothers intriguing. The bright side, it was free and short!
I listened to the Audible Original recording of this play, and while I liked the voice actors (but missed Kit Harington‘s accent), the scene transitions and other sound effects were often harsh. I feel like I‘ve seen or read this play before because parts seemed familiar, but it‘s very much about the relationship of the brothers and the plot details are really unimportant. Those who enjoy character-driven stories will like this more than I did.
