The Rowan
The Rowan | Anne McCaffrey

The first book in the Tower and the Hive sequence The Talents were the elite of the Nine Star League. Their gifts were many and varied, ranging from the gently telepathic, to the rare and extremely valued Primes. On the Primes rested the entire economic wealth and communications systems of the civilised worlds. But Primes were scarce - only very rarely was a new one born. And now, on the planet Altair, in a small mining colony on the western mountain range, a new Prime existed, a three-year-old girl - trapped in a giant mud slide that had wiped out the rest of the Rowan mining community. Every Altarian who was even mildly talented could 'hear' the child crying for help, but no one knew where she was buried. Every resource on the planet was centred into finding 'The Rowan' - the new Prime, the first ever to be born on Altair, an exceptionally unique Prime, more talented, more powerful, more agoraphobic, more lonely, than any other Prime yet known in the Nine Star league. Anne McCaffrey, the Hugo award winning author of the bestselling Dragonriders of Pern novels, is one of science fiction's most popular authors. She lives in a house of her own design, Dragonhold-Underhill, in County Wicklow, Ireland. Visit the author's website at www.annemccaffrey.net

#AlphabetGame #letterR

Catching up on a few things today after being unwell this weekend, including this game. The book I‘ve chosen for this letter was one of my favourite McCaffreys when I was a teenager. The first in the Tower & the Hive series,it‘s about a young girl found after a landslide on her outer planet kills her parents. Her deafening mental screams mark her as a powerful Talent, capable of moving ships between planets. Highly recommend.

CarolynM Hope you‘re feeling better now💕 Hope your family are better too. 2y
Andrew65 Another one not heard of. 2y

I have a dilemma!

I've adored these book covers for years and loved the series as a teen. But after rereading them all recently, I hated the stories.

Do I keep them for the sake of the covers? Or do I unhaul a series whose storytelling I no longer enjoy? #poll

HeyT If you dislike the stories now why don‘t you just scan the covers and ditch the books? 4y
hissingpotatoes @HeyT Ooh, that's a good idea! Thank you! 4y

Even almost 30yrs later, this SciFi novel sings with life and originality. McCaffrey was a genius at writing space stories that were more about characters than settings, though the settings are pretty special themselves. I could reread every single book she wrote multiple times and still not get bored. I highly recommend her not just to seasoned SciFi readers like myself, but to the next generation of us who may not know who she is.🚀

I‘m over halfway through The Rowan and I‘m pairing it with a snack of a tub of the new Connoisseur Australian Native Collection:Bush Honey + Nougat with Cinnamon Myrtle. #HSreadathon

Edit: The ice cream was amazing!

I‘ve had a sudden craving for McCaffrey so I‘m starting with The Rowan series which is one of my favourites. Hell, I love all her series, the Pern books, the CrystalSinger trilogy, the Ship Who Sang series etc. But I do have a soft spot for this one, it‘s just so captivating with its Psionic Talents, barquecats, hive-mind aliens & an orphan girl right in the middle of it all.

Megabooks I remember reading these!! #nostalgia 5y

I love this series so much. It was this & McCaffrey‘s Dragonriders of Pern series that made me fall in love with SFF. Rowan‘s story as a powerful telekinetic-pathic with a tragic origin & an enigmatic prophesied future tugs on my heart strings & imagination from the first pages. It‘s such a joy to be revisiting this beloved story.

Mtroiano Love the cover! ❤️ 5y
Redjewel_7734 @Mtroiano so same. The covers of this whole series are great 😊 5y

4/5 ⭐. There were definitely moments that irritated me, but then there would be amazing moments I loved. Had to get used to the weird pacing. Upon this reread the book didn't live up to my memory of the perfect rating I gave it when I first read it as a teen, but it was still very entertaining. I can't wait to reread the rest of the series. Also I love the cover art! #projectreread #TomeInfinityAndBeyond2018

#SizzlinSummerBooks #day18 #Futuristic All of Anne McCaffreys books are set in a future version of Earth. This particular series is in a future where "Psy talents" are used to run the galaxy. The rare talents called "Primes" have the ability to use telekinesis to send & catch transports, cargo & also have strong telepathic talent to talk to other primes and Psy talents all over the colonised galaxy. One of my favourite SciFi series of all time.?

Lauren_reading This was one of the first books I ever checked out from the "grown up" section of the library! 7y

Anne McCaffrey was one of the first SciFi writers I ever picked up as a kid at the library. Together with Piers Anthony & Raymond Feist she gave me a lifelong love of a Fantasy/SciFi. She was a very prolific writer, along with this series(The Tower & The Hive) she wrote the Dragonflight series, Crystalsinger,The Ship Who Sang & the Doona books. All of her stories were based on psychic abilities as she had a great belief in their existence. 5⭐️

minkyb Well said in 451 characters or less! 7y

I'm having trouble settling on one of my bountiful choices on my tbr, so I'm rereading The Rowan by Anne McCaffrey. I did have a physical copy but it's another lost on the way to my library so it's ebook time. This is a fascinating take on scifi, in order to colonise space, humans have relied on "Talents",people with psy abilities, telekinesis, teleportation etc, in order to move ships & cargo between worlds. Most of McCaffreys novels involve Psy.

readinginthedark Sounds interesting! 7y
Lizpixie @readinginthedark it is. If you've never read McCaffrey you should give her a try. She's very readable.👍 7y
readinginthedark @Lizpixie I've read the first Pern book but that's it so far. 7y

I remember as a little girl asking my dad about women writers and then about Sci-fi. He just handed me this. It was so good and gave me hope I'll write sci-fi one day. #publishedinthe1990s #photoadaynov16

kyraleseberg I remember someone giving me this book in middle school and I always put off reading it because I wasn't really in to sci fi at that time. I'm going to go through the boxes in the attic and find it! 7y
ReadingOver50 One of my all time favorite authors 😄 7y
literarymermaid @kyraleseberg I hope you enjoy it! Its been so long, I've been thinking about rereading it. 7y

literarymermaid @ReadingOver50 Me too! Strangely, I never got to read any of her other series. 7y
ReadingOver50 @StoredFeminism I've read most of her books. The Dragon Riders of Pern series is great 👍 7y
literarymermaid @ReadingOver50 That was the next one that my dad recommended too, but then he never bought it for me (I was too young to do do for myself at the time) and then it got buried in my virtual TBR. I still plan on coming back arond to it. 7y

I love Anne McCaffrey. I do. And the first half of the book was fabulous. But once she brought in the love interest the whole story went downhill. The relationship is unhealthy and rushed. Also the main suspenseful event that needed to be overcome, was rushed, summarized, and solved quickly with no intellectual strain. Disappointing.
