2.5/5⭐ The beginning was great, with a spaceship mystery & a cast of characters offering their unique approaches. But by about 1/2 of the way through, the thriller focus far outweighed the sci-fi focus. I appreciate some thriller, but I missed sci-fi at the end. It was to the point that the sci-fi wasn't ever fully explained. I also didn't like the way the author handled issues of race & gender. #projectSAMS #projectTBR #TomeInfinityAndBeyond2018

2/5⭐ It's equally frightening, disappointing, & unsurprising that a book written in 1979 satirizes the same political BS still present & thriving in the USA today. Any of these critical kernels can only be found in part 1. The whole book is bizarre, but part 2 just takes the cake. It lacks cohesion, is difficult to follow, didn't really add anything new, & I just didn't care. #projectnew #projectTBR #TomeInfinityAndBeyond2018

4/5⭐ I've watched season 1 of the anime, & I wanted to read the source material. It did not disappoint. The artwork is wonderful, each panel's contents perfectly chosen to convey action, tension, or emotion. Even knowing what would happen, I was still caught up in that post-apocalyptic horror vibe, the overwhelming threat to humanity, including tearing up at the inciting conflict of this volume. #projectnew #TomeInfinityAndBeyond2018

The Gods Themselves | Isaac Asimov

3/5⭐ I appreciated the ideas & writing. Asimov is a master of dialogue & showing vs. telling, of pulling the reader into the way his worlds work without any exposition. I was often confused by the physics. The entire middle section on the alien parallel world was truly wonderful on its own & my favorite part of the book, but I didn't think it added anything to the overall plot. #projectSAMS #projectTBR #TomeInfinityAndBeyond2018

2.5/5⭐ The writing was tight, the prose often lovely. However, there were factors I didn't buy into, including civilization being even remotely similar across a million years & genocide as conflict resolution. I really disliked the main character. It definitely has the feel of a western with arrogant hero who gets the woman as a prize, just set on Mars with time travel. Not fond of that dynamic. #projectnew #projectTBR #TomeInfinityAndBeyond2018

4/5⭐ It was rough to understand the world initially, but then I was hooked. I especially appreciated seeing a bisexual, polyamorous male lead, in a society where it's not an issue, in a book written 26 years ago. There's so much going on: worldbuilding, philosophy, science, characters, adventure, intrigue, etc. Everything balanced perfectly, I was invested 100%, & I enjoyed every minute.

Why do I feel that ghosts are more real
Than these creatures of substance and matter?
Why does their song seem to drive me along
More than humanity‘s drivel and pratter?

"When the work was done Gabriel would compose music for the bone trumpet, a lament for Vissarion played on an instrument made from Vissarion's femur. Vissarion would be pleased, he thought, that his remains had become music, leaping into life like Athene from the thigh of Zeus."

One of those rare examples of something equally grotesque and lovely. #projectTBR #projectnew #TomeInfinityAndBeyond2018
