Polyglot How I Learn Languages
Polyglot How I Learn Languages | Kat Lomb
4 posts | 3 read | 9 to read
KAT LOMB (1909-2003) was one of the great polyglots of the 20th century. A translator and one of the first simultaneous interpreters in the world, Lomb worked in 16 languages for state and business concerns in her native Hungary. She achieved further fame by writing books on languages, interpreting, and polyglots. Polyglot: How I Learn Languages, first published in 1970, is a collection of anecdotes and reflections on language learning. Because Dr. Lomb learned her languages as an adult, after getting a PhD in chemistry, the methods she used will thus be of particular interest to adult learners who want to master a foreign language.

CONGRATS & THANK YOU @JoScho for this creative #UniquelyYou #giveaway! I can speak & write 4 languages (English, Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin & Cantonese). Started learning Greek, Japanese & Hebrew 2 years ago. Taking it slow. Yes! I love learning languages 😁

Cinfhen Impressive 6y
somebooksaround That‘s amazing! Hebrew is interesting, with no vowels. I‘m so rusty, painfully so lol, but it‘s very interesting! Amazing to be able to speak all those language!! 6y

Mehso-so

Definitely an opinionated look at the topic, but an interesting enough read on language learning from a clearly talented person.

RaimeyGallant Interesting. And welcome to Litsy! #LitsyWelcomeWagon Some of us put together Litsy tips to help new Littens navigate the site. It's the link in my bio on my page in case you need it. 6y

My favorite terms from this book are "linguistic microclimate" and "autologue"? It includes the author's experiences learning languages, translating, and interpreting. #languagelearning #nonfictionchallenge17 Recommended by @tricours

Desha Love! Added to TBR! I'm a member of a polyglot group in San Diego CA. I'm curious about where in Japan you are living? I lived in Kumamoto-ken (specifically Amakusa) years ago! ❤️📚❤️ 7y

I'm gonna read more in my target languages (German & Polish) in 2017! Despite a light hang over and sleeping away most of the day today I've read my 5% of German 🤓 Who else is in? #languagelearning

I-read-and-eat Danish and improving my French are on my list this year. I'm in! 7y

tricours @mhillis @I-read-and-eat @jessicarenee @Moony @Sarah83 That's great! I would also recommend the book in the post to everyone, it's written by a woman who learned looooots of languages and whose primary method was reading! It's available free online in various languages. 7y
mhillis Thanks! I've just downloaded it👍 7y
Sarah83 where have seen several languages? I only find a free download in English? 🤔 7y
tricours @Sarah83 I'll have a look tomorrow, I've seen it in at least Russian and Hungarian too, but it was perhaps 7 years ago. 😊 7y
Sarah83 thanks. you don't need to hurry. I've got enough to read meanwhile. 😂 7y
