Cunt
Cunt: A Declaration of Independence | Inga Muscio
An ancient title of respect for women, the word cunt long ago veered off this noble path. Inga Muscio traces the road from honor to expletive, giving women the motivation and tools to claim cunt as a positive and powerful force in their lives. With humor and candor, she shares her own history as she explores the cultural forces that influence womens relationships with their bodies. Sending out a call for every woman to be the Cuntlovin Ruler of Her Sexual Universe, Muscio stands convention on its head by embracing all things cunt-related. This updated edition features a new foreword by Betty Dodson, an introduction by Derrick Jensen, a new afterword by the author and an updated and expanded resource section.

Bailedbailed

Not even 48 hours into 2021 and I‘m bailing SO HARD on this one.

This book started off seemingly rather charming, but that quickly grew tiresome, detracting from any authority this author may have (which, judging from this book, is none). Then the inaccuracies started. This book is historically and medically inaccurate. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics The suggestions in this book aren‘t even sane (if you track your period with the moon cycles, you can know when you‘re going to get pregnant before you even have sex). I almost wonder if this author has any grip on reality (she manifested her third abortion with the help of some friends through massage and the power of her mind). 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 3y
GingerAntics Protests feed oppression. All female orgies are a safe alternative to sex. There was a medical system in place during the medieval period. If you‘ve been raped, beaten, abused, “face it, forget it.” Etymologically false statements about the words cunt, bitch, and whore. You could not pay me to keep reading this drivel. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 3y
GingerAntics The one thing she got right is you can say whatever you want, add some pictures, and sell it as a book. Clearly, that‘s what she‘s done here. I want my money back. I have absolutely no idea how this “book” made it to a 20th anniversary edition. Wishful thinking? The fairies? Whatever non-medicinal drugs she‘s on? 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 3y

GingerAntics I am truly concerned in the current COVID pandemic for anyone who takes her advice seriously. Doctors aren‘t going to help you. You can kill off viruses through these herbs. How many clueless women have died in this pandemic because they believed this woman and didn‘t seek real medical attention when they needed it most? #IngaMuscio #Cunt #SexPositive2021 (edited) 3y

CarolynM Thanks for the heads up on this book. The quotes you've shared would be hilarious if they weren't so dangerous. 3y
GingerAntics @CarolynM right?! This book was recommended by someone I really respect, but this Book is truly troubling. Did I read the wrong book? 3y
Eggbeater Wow! That sounds awful!. Too bad, I liked the title. 3y
GingerAntics @Eggbeater exactly! I was so excited. I got the recommendation from a friend I greatly respect. I just don‘t even know. Maybe I read the wrong book? 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I thought I‘d check in and see how it was going....I‘ll definitely skip this one! 😬 3y

Is it acceptable? Really? I don‘t know many grandmothers that would even entertain this discussion. News flash, they didn‘t use birth control, they likely had a very few lovers (mainly grandpa), and the chances of them having an abortion were slim. This author is straight up clueless. The most definitely never talked about their periods and probably wouldn‘t to this day. WTF
#IngaMuscio #Cunt #SexPositive2021

Gaylagal2 As open minded and liberal as my Grandmother was, I never talked to her about details on sex🤣😂 Yep, this bitch is crazy! 🤙 3y
GingerAntics @Gaylagal2 my grandmother was watching an episode of Oprah and couldn‘t figure out what she was talking about. I had to tell my grandmother she was talking about maturation and her reaction was all the conversation we ever had about sex, and it‘s about what I‘d expectation toddler to come up with when talking about sex. 3y

Uuuuuuuuum... I‘m going with every civil rights leader, every women‘s suffrage leader, PLUS @TheBookHippie on the true nature of protests. I‘m also going with history on whether or not they actually work (hint: they do).
#IngaMuscio #Cunt #SexPositive2021

BarbaraBB Whooo. Wat a stupidity in all those quotes. Is she trying to shock us?! 3y
TheBookHippie Pfffft. Okay that‘s idiotic. We are not all sheep. Protest does work. I agree people need to change for the inside however some people have actually changed by seeing protest .. good grief that‘s obtuse! 3y
TheBookHippie @BarbaraBB that‘s a lot of stupidity I agree🤯 3y

GingerAntics @BarbaraBB @TheBookHippie and these are just the highlights. The level of stupidity, immaturity, self centredness is astounding. No idea how this is seen as such a great book or ever got to a 20th anniversary edition. 3y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics who knows 😩 3y
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie I‘m guessing it‘s either her fairies or her non medicinal herbs that told her this needed to be printed again. 3y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics OMG laughing my ass off......too many mushrooms is my guess! 3y

I‘m all for a woman‘s right to make the decision that‘s right for her. Don‘t get me wrong. This, though. After THREE unplanned pregnancies and THREE abortions, so wants readers to trust what she has to say about birth control?! Seriously?
#IngaMuscio #Cunt #SexPositive2021

Caroline2 What the....? 😲 Does she just not want to use the word abortion?! (edited) 3y
Butterfinger Yeah can see why you are bailing. 3y
GingerAntics @Caroline2 oh no, she used abortion for the first two when she went to a clinic and “got vacuumed out” and felt horrible for two weeks. This was not empowering and she felt better after three days. 🙄 All she thought about for a week was losing the pregnancy and then she describes it just dropping out of her body one day while she was at the kitchen sink. 3y
See All 8 Comments
GingerAntics @Caroline2 Then again, she likes bleeding on her kitchen floor while on her period because it makes her feel powerful, so grossest moment of the book is still a toss up. 3y
GingerAntics @Butterfinger I‘m so glad I‘m not alone in being tricked by this author. 3y
Caroline2 Oh my..... 🤮 3y
GingerAntics @Caroline2 right?! She‘s REALLY odd. The long discussion of using sea sponges instead of products produced by male owned companies was...uh... interesting. I‘ve never been so proud to use tampons in my life. 3y
Caroline2 😆 👍 3y

I‘ve literally known ultra conservative Christian boys to burst into tears the first time they got a proper erection because of this vary thing (their mother also said she wanted them circumcised so sex wouldn‘t feel as good, to help them control their urges). 🤦🏼‍♀️ That oppressive madness isn‘t just oppressive to women you dimwit!!!

Yes, the secret to truly tracking your period is the moon. Even if your period is irregular, it won‘t matter if you also track the moon. Are you “utterly hip” to what she‘s laying down? 🤦🏼‍♀️ You can even determine when you‘re going to get pregnant BEFORE you even have sex. You just need the MOON. Ancient women knew all about this stuff. 🥃🥃🥃

marleed Oh my gosh - these quotes! Credit to you for sticking with this craziness as long as you did and trying to make sense of it. 3y
GingerAntics @marleed this book was recommended by someone I really respect, so I‘m sort of confused at the moment. Did I read the wrong book?! 3y

Yes, because medical organisations and systems totally started in the medieval period. 🤦🏼‍♀️ If she thinks men didn‘t feel the need to control women before the medieval period, clearly she‘s never heard of the ROMAN EMPIRE!!! 🤬

This quote highlights so much of what annoys me about this book. The ridiculous, teenager like sentences. The rape is in the past, it‘s gone, just face it and forget it line was pretty much then end for me. This book is total rubbish.

julesG It's a 20th anniversary edition??? 🙈🤦🏻‍♀️ 3y
Butterfinger Good grief. 3y
Gaylagal2 But it's not in the past....still happening! Has she ever, ever heard of human trafficking? In itself is an epidemic! Like I said, bitch is crazy and I'll add ignorant too 🤙 3y

GingerAntics @Gaylagal2 EXACTLY!!! She‘s just taking out of her back side, I swear. 3y
GingerAntics @julesG sadly, yes. No idea how this got past this first edition, honestly. 3y
Eggbeater This sounds fascinatingly horrible. I might have to hate read it. 3y

Pickpick

If you know me- you know I love the word cunt. Not to use as an insult though. I hate that one of the most demonized words in English is a synonym of vagina. Vaginas are too magical and beautiful to be so hateful. I had to read an excerpt from this book in college and have been meaning to read the rest for years. I finally did and loved it. ⤵️

sarahlandis I loved the earlier chapters that covered topics such as fertility and periods, but the overall tone and writing stated annoying me the farther I got in. The 20th Ann. Edition also corrects some inclusivity issues when it comes to transgender people, but this book lacks representation. 4y

Bailedbailed

After my mum told me how ableistic this book is, and how much this woman hates medicine, using very bad lgbtq+ slurs to describe Lilith, I‘ve made a choice not to read further on. No ableism/anti medicine/lgbtq+ phobes will be tolerated, even if their book is good.

Findabhair Well I‘ve realised she‘s a lesbian her self, so it‘s ok I guess for her to use that d slur, but she still seems very ableistic. 4y

I hate bailing but my god.....so abelistic! So horrible! This author is clueless on medical issues. I need a good INTERSECTIONAL feminist book....this is not intersectional at all.

Why oh why do I get the feeling there is some serious abelism going on in here 🤦🏼‍♀️ why can‘t I find a good book that does not make light of people with serious medical issues...herbs ain‘t gonna do it for serious medical stuff y‘all. Smh. I need a database so I can rule out homophobia, transphobia, racism, and in this case abelism from books BEFORE I spend a sweet fortune on them.

Cunt: clearly not a book that's going to give a delicate, demure or subtle presentation. Inga Muscio sets out to redeem a damnable word which has been irreversibly (or so it seemed) tied to negativity and shame. This book covers a variety of topics from books and art, to consumerism and prostitution. Muscio's Declaration of Independence encourages us to defend womankind, to be outspoken in our sisterhood and work openly to end patriarchy.

"Most Whores are completely unaware of how important they are to society, and subsequently do not have the opportunity to learn how to be all-compassionate, all-loving, all-giving and all-receiving incarnations of the Goddess... Without honoring Whores, we cannot truly understand and transcend the dynamics of violence, destruction and ignorance fostered in our cuntfearing society."

What the hell am I reading?

#Riotgrams Day 3! This is definitely the most shocking #OneWordTitle book that I have. It was super influential for me in my early 20s feminist education. I haven't read it since that period in my life, so I've no doubt I would disagree with some of it now and have a more critical eye (especially the total erasure of trans women, which Muscio does address in the afterword). But there's no denying its effect on my identity as a feminist.
