Rice, Noodle, Fish
Rice, Noodle, Fish: Deep Travels Through Japan's Food Culture | Matt Goulding
2 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
Finalist for the 2016 IACP Awards: Literary Food Writing An innovative new take on the travel guide, Rice, Noodle, Fish decodes Japan's extraordinary food culture through a mix of in-depth narrative and insider advice, along with 195 color photographs. In this 5000-mile journey through the noodle shops, tempura temples, and teahouses of Japan, Matt Goulding, co-creator of the enormously popular Eat This, Not That! book series, navigates the intersection between food, history, and culture, creating one of the most ambitious and complete books ever written about Japanese culinary culture from the Western perspective. Written in the same evocative voice that drives the award-winning magazine Roads & Kingdoms, Rice, Noodle, Fish explores Japan's most intriguing culinary disciplines in seven key regions, from the kaiseki tradition of Kyoto and the sushi masters of Tokyo to the street food of Osaka and the ramen culture of Fukuoka. You won't find hotel recommendations or bus schedules; you will find a brilliant narrative that interweaves immersive food journalism with intimate portraits of the cities and the people who shape Japan's food culture. This is not your typical guidebook. Rice, Noodle, Fish is a rare blend of inspiration and information, perfect for the intrepid and armchair traveler alike. Combining literary storytelling, indispensable insider information, and world-class design and photography, the end result is the first ever guidebook for the new age of culinary tourism.

New book, inspired by @shawnmooney who I saw added this on Goodreads the other day 😊 I've been a tad obsessed with Japanese food and culture since traveling there a few years ago so am really excited about this one. 🍣🍜🇯🇵

ReadingEnvy What does it mean to be an "Anthony bourdain book"? 7y

cariashley @shawnmooney ah awesome will definitely pick that one up! 7y
cariashley @ReadingEnvy I had no idea until I got the book in the mail today. Seems like he's some sort of partner with the Roads and Kingdoms digital media company. The foreword to this book is a series of letters between Bourdain and the author Matt Goulding. 7y
LeahBergen @cariashley @readingenvy Yes, I have another one that has Bourdain's "stamp" on it 7y
LeahBergen Oh, and I looked at your posted book in the bookstore the other day - I want it! 7y
shawnmooney @ReadingEnvy No, not yet. The one I just suggested to cariaashley is the only Japanese food book I've ever read, except for a couple of these manga, which are also good: 7y
ReadingEnvy @LeahBergen oh my god I can't believe I didn't know, I mean I follow him in Instagram where he posts videos of his hotel room beds so I feel ashamed 7y
cariashley @ReadingEnvy @LeahBergen I didn't know either, and I also follow his hotel rooms onInstagram (which I find equal parts amusing/frustrating since he never posts a location!!) 7y
ReadingEnvy @cariashley doesn't it feel like someday he's going to scan over and he's going to be naked in the mirror or something? Lol.... And sometimes I think he is in his NYC apartment but I'm not sure. I like trying to guess. 7y
cariashley @ReadingEnvy yes I can definitely recognize the NYC ones, he posts those more frequently. He has an amazing view from uptown! 7y

I barely made it to library with 10 minutes until closing last night and picked up these holds. Yay!

Doesn't Lulu look like she could fit into one of these books as a book mark?! #TBR #bookstack #librarystack #dogsoflitsy #lulu #bookhaul
