House of Medici
House of Medici | Christopher Hibbert
4 posts | 6 read | 4 to read
It was a dynasty with more wealth, passion, and power than the houses of Windsor, Kennedy, and Rockefeller combined. It shaped all of Europe and controlled politics, scientists, artists, and even popes, for three hundred years. It was the house of Medici, patrons of Botticelli, Michelangelo and Galileo, benefactors who turned Florence into a global power center, and then lost it all.The House of Medici picks up where Barbara Tuchman's Hibbert delves into the lives of the Medici family, whose legacy of increasing self-indulgence and sexual dalliance eventually led to its self-destruction. With twenty-four pages of black-and-white illustrations, this timeless saga is one of Quill's strongest-selling paperbacks.

Mehso-so

I admit that I confused this family with the Borgia family. They were very similar, in fact, so I don't feel too foolish. They started as bankers in Florence. It seemed to me that every other generation was patrons to the arts, while the other generations were lazy and/or violent. The family was often fighting the papacy except when they had a son or nephew as a pope. I'm glad I read it. I learned more about Italy's history before unification.

Crazeedi Would you definitely recommend? I need a good book to immerse myself and I love reading about this period 3d
Butterfinger @crazeedi I can't honestly recommend it unless you want to take notes. All the names that the family was fighting ran over each other, and I would forget why they're fighting. It was interesting to learn the different personalities and how each one added to art and architecture. 3d
Butterfinger #FoodandLit @Texreader @Catsandbooks my Italy book for this month. 3d

Completed H off my #LitsyAtoZ! Only gave the book 3 stars on Amazon and Goodreads because it wasn't what I was expecting, and only really got interesting towards the end. @BookishMarginalia

Just had to download the Kindle app as there's no way I'm going to be able to complete the challenges without it! 56% through The House of Medici by Christopher Hibbert - finishing off a 2016 read and ticking off the H for my #litsyatoz author at the same time! @BookishMarginalia
