Fashion Victims
Fashion Victims: The Dangers of Dress Past and Present | Alison Matthews David
14 posts | 6 read | 13 to read
From insidious murder weapons to blaze-igniting crinolines, clothing has been the cause of death, disease and madness throughout history, by accident and design. Clothing is designed to protect, shield and comfort us, yet lurking amongst seemingly innocuous garments we find hats laced with mercury, frocks laden with arsenic and literally 'drop-dead gorgeous' gowns. Fabulously gory and gruesome, Fashion Victims takes the reader on a fascinating journey through the lethal history of women's, men's and children's dress, in myth and reality. Drawing upon surviving fashion objects and numerous visual and textual sources, encompassing louse-ridden military uniforms, accounts of the fiery deaths of Oscar Wilde's half-sisters and dancer Isadora Duncan's accidental strangulation by entangled scarf; the book explores how garments have tormented those who made and wore them, and harmed animals and the environment in the process. Vividly chronicling evidence from Greek mythology to the present day, Matthews David puts everyday apparel under the microscope and unpicks the dark side of fashion. Fashion Victims is lavishly illustrated with over 125 images and is a remarkable resource for everyone from scholars and students to fashion enthusiasts.

I'll defer to a quote from the press release for an excellent summary:

A boldly gory & thoroughly illustrated history of death by clothing, from blazing crinolines to mercury-laden fur.

I highly recommend the book in general, but it's a particularly significant reference volume for those working in costume archives and in vintage clothing houses, as well as those in academia with study collections or large stocks of antique/vintage clothing.

Informative, beautiful pictures and interesting history. You aren't going to pick this up unless you are already interested in those things, so it will fit what you are after.
I picked it up after reading a novel set in France in the 19th century, and it fit right in with that.

I didn't know #sockssunday was a thing!
But I took this picture earlier today anyway. Avoiding my marking and going back to school tomorrow by having a Happy Reading Day today. Which means the fireplace channel, candles, pets snuggled up, PJs, fuzzy blankets, my new favorite mug, my awesome new reading socks, and a stack of books. And no one is allowed to bother me! Hehehe! Almost makes going back to work easier. :-)

Bought this for myself after doing some sightseeing on vacation in Toronto. My wonderful husband walked 5 km out of his way with me to take me to the shoe museum! Very informative book, and lovely photography of the items on display as well. As a history nut and shoe lover, I am very excited to peruse this!

This is excellent! Well laid out, well written and containing well-chosen photos. Some ickiness about symptoms of poisoning (and testing poisonous materials on animals 😔), but overall a book that is hard put down.

From the chapter on arsenic. So pretty! So deadly!

LeahBergen And it's beautiful! 😮 7y
LauraBrook I recently watched the Hidden Killers series and it reignited my fascination with arsenic. Adding both books to my TBR! 7y

rabbitprincess @LeahBergen There's a picture of a green ballgown that's even more stunning! @LauraBrook I recommend both! Is the Hidden Killers series on Netflix? 7y
LauraBrook @rabbitprincess I caught it on my PBS station, and it's not on my American Netflix. But it's a British series, so maybe you have it? The host is that younger British historian with long curly blond hair and a nose ring. Dang, I can't remember her name! Do you know who I'm talking about? 7y
rabbitprincess @LauraBrook Apparently it's Suzannah Lipscomb. I don't think I've seen any documentaries she's presented. Maybe my PBS will decide to air it sometime. 7y
LauraBrook @rabbitprincess Yes, that's her! (Sorry, still catching up with Litsy, it distracted me from looking her up.) I hope it airs (or ends up streaming somewhere) for you! 7y
