Paving the New Road
Paving the New Road | Sulari Gentill
2 posts | 4 read | 4 to read
It's 1933, and the political landscape of Europe is darkening. Eric Campbell, the man who would be Australia's Fiihrer, is on a fascist tour of the Continent, meeting dictators over cocktails and seeking allegiances in a common cause. Yet the Australian way of life is not undefended. Old enemies have united to undermine Campbell's ambitions. The clandestine armies of the Establishment have once again mobilised to thwart any friendship with the Third Reich. But when their man in Munich is killed, desperate measures are necessary. Now Rowland Sinclair must travel to Germany to defend Australian democracy from the relentless march of Fascism. Amidst the goosestepping euphoria of a rising Nazi movement, Rowland encounters those who will change the course of history. In a world of spies, murderers and despotic madmen, he can trust no-one but an artist, a poet and a brazen sculptress.

Pickpick

One good things coming out of sleepless nights: time to listen to audiobooks! This one is my favorite #rowlandsinclair so far, maybe because of the story playing out in 1930s germany. I‘m positively surprised about the diversity and research of this account of nazi-munich.

CarolynM I loved this one too. Love all the real people they met. 5y
Texreader Yes my insomnia does help me get reading done! This sounds great! I added it to my tbr list 5y

Unity Mitford - I have a very literal mind.
The tagged book is part of the Rowland Sinclair series, very entertaining books about an artist in 1930's Sydney who has adventures all over the world, often encountering real historical figures. In this one he travels to Germany and meets all sorts of interesting people, including Unity.

batsy This sounds fascinating! I like your literal interpretation :) 6y
GlassAsDiamonds Ooohhh...! I‘ve never heard of these (and find myself inhaling anything set in historical Sydney these days!). Any good? 6y
CarolynM @GlassAsDiamonds I think so. I thought the first one, A Few Right Thinking Men was particularly good, lots of stuff about Jack Lang and the New Guard. They're entertaining rather than literary, but I think they're better written and have more substance than a lot of that sort of thing. 6y
Cinfhen I'm stumped right now, so I think your choice is brilliant 😊 6y
Cathythoughts Very good 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 6y
