The Death and Life of the Great American School System
The Death and Life of the Great American School System: How Testing and Choice Are Undermining Education | Diane Ravitch
4 posts | 5 read | 5 to read
A passionate plea to preserve and renew public education, The Death and Life of the Great American School System is a radical change of heart from one of Americas best-known education experts. Diane Ravitchformer assistant secretary of education and a leader in the drive to create a national curriculumexamines her career in education reform and repudiates positions that she once staunchly advocated. Drawing on over forty years of research and experience, Ravitch critiques todays most popular ideas for restructuring schools, including privatization, standardized testing, punitive accountability, and the feckless multiplication of charter schools. She shows conclusively why the business model is not an appropriate way to improve schools. Using examples from major cities like New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Denver, and San Diego, Ravitch makes the case that public education today is in peril. Ravitch includes clear prescriptions for improving Americas schools: leave decisions about schools to educators, not politicians or businessmen devise a truly national curriculum that sets out what children in every grade should be learning expect charter schools to educate the kids who need help the most, not to compete with public schools pay teachers a fair wage for their work, not merit pay based on deeply flawed and unreliable test scores encourage family involvement in education from an early age The Death and Life of the Great American School System is more than just an analysis of the state of play of the American education system. It is a must-read for any stakeholder in the future of American schooling.

Not sure why I read books in educational reform. As a teacher it can get frustrating. Ms Ravitch understands the problems and has great ideas. But no one is listening to her (or the teachers.)

It was a good book, if a bit dry. Paragraph after paragraph of data and stats. A bit ironic since she was arguing against the current educational obsession with data.

#todayinsj is not an historical event but a call to action. Call your senator to request them to vote no to Betsy DeVos. Call 202-224-3121 and the switchboard operator can connect you to your senator. And read this book to learn more about our public education system!

RohitSawant Watching Elizabeth Warren wipe the floor with DeVos at the confirmation hearing was like watching an episode of BrainDead. 7y
shanebeth I'm a public educator and I'm honestly terrified of this woman. I'm beyond frustrated that the Senators from my state are refusing to listen to the people they are supposed to represent. 😞😢 7y
Notafraidofwords Please please people call. I've been calling every day since I saw her on television. 7y
