NonNonBa | Shigeru Mizuki
4 posts | 4 read | 13 to read
The first English translation of Mizuki's best-loved work NonNonBa is the definitive work by acclaimed Gekiga-ka Shigeru Mizuki, a poetic memoir detailing his interest in yokai (spirit monsters). Mizukis childhood experiences with yokai influenced the course of his life and oeuvre; he is now known as the forefather of yokai manga. His spring 2011 book, Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths, was featured on PRIs The World, where Marco Werman scored a coveted interview with one of the most famous visual artists working in Japan today. Within the pages of NonNonBa, Mizuki explores the legacy left him by his childhood explorations of the spirit world, explorations encouraged by his grandmother, a grumpy old woman named NonNonBa. NonNonBa is a touching work about childhood and growing up, as well as a fascinating portrayal of Japan in a moment of transition. NonNonBa was the first manga to win the Angoulme Prize for Best Album. Much like its namesake, NonNonBa is at once funny and nostalgic, firmly grounded

One more for #tbrbingo. Hmmm. Maybe I should go for Pachinko next. Do diagonals count, @WhatDeeReads?

I adored this #manga. The relationship between Shige and Nonnonba was so sweet. I loved reading about his childhood.

Sace It's got me thinking that I need to get back to Natsume's Book of Friends. 7y
Marchpane Too right diagonals count! Go for bingo! 7y
JackieSmith Pachinko was just announced as a National Book Award finalist--that's a good enough reason to read it, right? 7y

JacqMac Of course they count! And Pachinko is sooo good. 7y
CocoReads Diagonals count. I also think 4 corners plus the free space counts. And if you're an overachiever-I say go for the blackout! 7y
CocoReads Plus, Pachinko is great. Go for it! 7y
Sace @CocoReads I love that we have the same bingo mind/terminology (four corner, blackout). I'm really leaning towards blackout, but at the same time I'm lazy. 7y
CocoReads I play obsessive amounts of bingo on my phone when I can't sleep or focus on words 7y
Hollie I'd say Pachinko for the diagonal! 7y
Sace @Marchpane @CocoReads @Hollie @JacqMac I've gone so far as to actually pull the book off my shelf. 😊 7y
WhatDeeReads Yes, the diagonals count. Go for it! Not just for the bingo but because Pachinko is great! 7y

Reading Nonnonba with a Japanese art bookmark. This manga is sooo good. The art is wonderful and I'm learning a lot about yokai (ghosts, goblins, spirits and supernatural beings.) It's just as much about small town life pre WWII. I highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of #manga.

Erin7 Do you think this would be a good book for someone just getting started with manga? 7y
Sace @Erin7 Hmmm. I think I'm going to say yes. It's one volume so you don't have to commit to a bunch of volumes. The stories have that fantastical element, but ultimately are about childhood. And each story sort of stands alone so you don't have to keep up with a lot of info. 7y
Gezemice @Erin7 @RestlessFickleBookSlut I was wondering about starting manga, too, and did not know where to start. Maybe I should give it a try? 🤔 7y

Erin7 Thanks @RestlessFickleBookSlut. I'll definitely look into this one. 7y
alanacristin My TBR of Shigeru Mizuki is neverending 😂 i wish the English versions weren't so pricey. 7y
Sace @alanacristin this is my first Mizuki and I want to read more! What are some other Mizuki books available? 7y
Clare-Dragonfly I was going to say that sounds like a great book for both me and my husband. Then I saw that it's Shigeru Mizuki—my husband is a big fan, so yeah, we'll have to look for this one! 7y
Sha0102 What a gorgeous book mark! 7y
alanacristin I'm keen to read the Showa series as well as how ghosty weird stuff 7y
Sace @Sha0102 thank you! I actually bought it at Epcot years ago. 7y
Sace @alanacristin stacked! 7y
Sace @Clare-Dragonfly I am going to seek out more from this author. ❤️ him. 7y

They canceled school for Tuesday, too. I'm declaring a personal #tbrbingo #marathon. Hoping the tagged #manga will get me one more square.

WhatDeeReads Yay! Glad that the weather is bad enough that you get some reading time but not so bad that you are in peril. Hard line to walk. 7y

This is just beautiful. Incredibly moving, the story revolves around Shigeru Mizuki's childhood, but the story is far more mature than one might expect. Highly recommended. #LitsyAtoZ

LauraJ Mizuki is pretty amazing. 7y
Smrloomis @LauraJ Yes, his work definitely is. 7y
