The Cremation of Sam McGee | Robert W. Service
Mehso-so

Published - 1907
Author - Robert W Service.
Illustrator- Poem, Ballad
A poem about the cremation of Sam Mcgee who froze to death, from the point of view of who cremated him. I liked this poem, It was eerily written and a bit spooky. The illustrations were unique and it was a very interesting story. His words paint the story very well.

I‘m going to read this poem with my 7th graders. Here‘s a link to the text via Poetry Foundation and a fantastic recording, read by Johnny Cash.

5th grade poem for #PoetryWednesday

Man, this one just rules. I talk it up for a few weeks saying that we‘ll be doing a light-hearted Christmas poem about burning dead bodies, so by the time we get here the kids are totally into it. This is a long one so google it for the ending. Or look it up on YouTube where it‘s read by Johnny Cash.

MariettaSG Fabulous idea! 6y

Pickpick

An #eclecticchristmasread. A Xmas eve tradition is the reading of this poem. “There are strange things done in the midnight sun
By the men who moil for gold;
The Arctic trails have their secret tales
That would make your blood run cold;
The Northern Lights have seen queer sights,
But the queerest they ever did see
Was that night on the marge of Lake Lebarge
I cremated Sam McGee.” #seasonsreadings2017

It was tempting to go with Poe for #spinechillingpoetry (gosh I ❤️️Poe!)... but I just love this old poem. The slow build gets me every time! If you would like to read it, I found a link!
